Word For The Day, Friday, May 20, 2005
May 20, 2005 | Argh

Posted on 05/20/2005 2:19:26 AM PDT by Argh

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of four "Words for the Day".

1. vagile (from Latin vagus wandering)

free to move about

2. vagility (as above)

the quality or state of being vagile; broadly: the capacity of an organism to compete successfully in the struggle for existence

3. panhygrous (well, it IS Friday)

moist in all parts

(I found this at the online International House of Logorrhea. I can't find it in my dictionaries at home, but it does appear in a number of places if you google it.)

4. dysphemism

(from Latin and Grek dys meaning abnormal, bad, etc., and from Greek pheme speech)

substitution of a disagreeable, offensive or disparaging word or expression for an agreeable or inoffensive one (as of axle grease for butter, old man for father, or heap for car); also: a word or expression so substituted - contrasted with euphemism

Example sentence:
I'm not sure this last word will have much utility for the class. If I use "scummy, lying, self-aggrandizing molester" for "Bill Clinton", am I using a dysphemism? No, I'm being accurate. And the same would apply to the rest of our usual suspects. A challenge for the students today.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using one or more of the Words for the Day in one or more sentences.
The sentences must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Huh. I have no interest in my hair, at all.

If kelly had a problem, I would gleefully shave her hair off, and try to make her laugh.

It might not work.

Arghie, here are the most important codes. You can't have my handcuffs, though. I'll space in between the < > thingys.

To struggle especially violently or roughly.

Noun:

< FONT color=blue > 1) A physical contest or struggle: scruffle.< br > 2) A rough argument, controversy or struggle against difficult odds for success.

Good Commando Friday word, don’t you think?

This is where I put in the break in between. You can write anything you want down here.

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

RULES: You must use the WFTD in a sentence for an A. For a + after your “A,” you must bring in a link of the word usage or something funny, a poem or some prose that will elucidate the word for us.

If you need to know how to link, come to the Subbie’s desk in the front of the class.

The hardest thing for me to learn was the HTML in here. I just copied Miss Rika's stuff initially, then went on my own.

I'm always changing my hair style so I guess I'm not too attached either - I'm looking for a new style for summer! Patton, if it continues to stay this hot I might have to consider shaving it all off! lol

No, no, no! Not NM! I dry up like a prune, my skin splits, things get ugly.

I can do two weeks in NM, then I am in the hospital. I have established this a number of times.

Two weeks in NM, then I quit.

I go back and forth with short and long........I'm ready for short again.

When I was around Jax age I started hollering about wanting long hair - my mother made a mistake by telling me that when I was 9 I could. On the morning of my 9th birthday I reminded her of that.............she did abide by her word and was surprised when I did get it cut shoulder length when I was about 13.

When Jax was born, my hair was almost waist length - by the time she was 4 months old it was back to being wash and wear short. It will be going back to that in the very near future.

Ok - I've missed that whole explanation - is it the heat in NM that does that to you? The Mountains are NOTHING like the rest of the state........ pine trees and cool air........ We left our home in West Texas one July for a trip to Angel Fire NM - naive me didn't think a thing about it - the temp at night in Angel Fire was 54 degrees....... we had shorts - lol - but it felt so good we didn't care......it was incredible!

I have a dream. I want to be Lady Godiva in the desert when no one but Cyber is there. Get on a horse and ride with just my hair as clothes. In a couple of years, I'll be ready. It's down to my waist now.

BTW, my mother always made me wear short hair, too. She's still alive, but she had six daughters. I was the one who had to have the short hair. Bless her wicked little heart.

Glad you let Jax do what she wanted with her hair, Gabz. Good mommy!

Mine starts getting shortened tomorrow.

I'm not even sure really why I started letting it grow again. It's well below my shoulders, but I rarely, if ever, wear it down - so there is no point in it being long.

Lack of humidity. I grew up in a swamp - VA. Seems I am genetically adapted to it.

In NM, I fall apart. It is ugly.

That was my problem too with long hair Gabz - it is so hot here that I would pull it back or use a clip and twist it up on my head.......... I realized that I wasn't doing anything other than putting it up to get it off my neck - so I cut it off

Never had allergies in Big Bear, CA. It's a mountain town with lots of pine trees and bulbs and just beautiful stuff.

I've only had allergies in So. Cal. and here in AZ. Must be the heat or change in weather or something. Who knows.

It's danged hot here, too, Whyisa. I just wear my hair in pony tails, pig tails or straight or curly if I'm staying home that day.

Too many years of the Vidal Sassoon cut. It always grew out before six weeks.

Oh, my mom's favorite haircut for me: the poodle. Remember that? OMG!

When I was "working" and being in public a lot I liked it long because I always found the tied up twist to look classy. I'm not doing any of those things any more, so why bother.

I actually look better with it short - so for lots of reasons I'm going to get rid of the mop!!!!
