In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of four "Words for the Day".
1. vagile (from Latin vagus wandering)
free to move about
2. vagility (as above)
the quality or state of being vagile; broadly: the capacity of an organism to compete successfully in the struggle for existence
3. panhygrous (well, it IS Friday)
moist in all parts
(I found this at the online International House of Logorrhea. I can't find it in my dictionaries at home, but it does appear in a number of places if you google it.)
4. dysphemism
(from Latin and Grek dys meaning abnormal, bad, etc., and from Greek pheme speech)
substitution of a disagreeable, offensive or disparaging word or expression for an agreeable or inoffensive one (as of axle grease for butter, old man for father, or heap for car); also: a word or expression so substituted - contrasted with euphemism
Example sentence:
I'm not sure this last word will have much utility for the class. If I use "scummy, lying, self-aggrandizing molester" for "Bill Clinton", am I using a dysphemism? No, I'm being accurate. And the same would apply to the rest of our usual suspects. A challenge for the students today.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using one or more of the Words for the Day in one or more sentences.
The sentences must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yikes! Good grief!
OK, Whyisa, why are you impersonating Jack today?
Thank you, Miss Laura. I thought it deserved something closer to an F-quadruple-minus myself, but what do I know? :^)
Outstanding post!
is that the french pronunciation of divine??
Close it AFTER she comes over - so she don't get away.....
Doing much better now...feel like I've been let out of pain prison...
knitting, i didn't realize you had had such a horrible time of it, i am glad to hear things have gotten better.
Right on...I like the way you think.
brian dorgan of ND is bloviating now. back when xsteen took ballet as a tot, his kid was in the same dance school. we sat behind him at a recital once when she was in K or 1st grade. now that was how many years ago now? 10? and back then he had a hairpiece and a trophy wife. trophy wife must be getting on in years now, might be time to upgrade....
I cant stand this mothereffer. I wish someone would run down there and punch him in his head.
Yep, life is better now...Be better if teen would get a steady girlfriend instead of these crash and burn romances that have been the root of lots of his misery...that and SAD and PTSD....Next winter we are getting SAD lights.
Good thinking.
No, they were thinking of Andy Devine. Divine in French is "divin".
i guess i should count my blessings with my two teens relative smooth lives. the biggest problem with xsboy is him being obsessed with xboxlive, which left to his own devices, he would play nonstop day and night, not taking time to eat or sleep. and xsteen is moody, has had a very tough year academically and who is not a SUNNY PERSONALITY generally speaking. no one is out doing anything bad or treating us disrespectfully or getting into any sort of trouble. i thank God for that. now xsbrownie is going to turn 11 and is showing prepubscent signs which scares me, bc she WILL be a problem, i fear.
Why oh why did I sign up to be a team captain for the Heart Walk?
oh no. is it raining there? it seems to have stopped here, but it was a blustery rainy day here.
We're getting a t-storm right now, but the Heart Walk isn't until August. It's all the fund raising between now and then that has me gnashing my teeth. My company is the lead sponsor, and we are committed to $100K. My department is committed to $27K. That's a lot of donuts!!
