Like I said, I had the exact same problem. Could receive, but could not send. To change the port setting go :

tools >
accounts >
edit >
advanced settings > (or "select advanced settings")
Change the port setting to 110

Or first check the port setting on your husband's email and use that one. This should solve the problem.

Port 110 is standard for POP, port 25 is standard for SMTP. If the problem is outgoing, SMTP is the culprit.
