If that really had happened, I imagine the Clinton-loving MSM would have reported breathlessly on Ian's heroism. Christiane Amanpour would have been even more breathless than usual. It's more likely he found a stash of Grey Goose and got bombed in the usual manner than he came under actual enemy fire.
