Orgasm Talk Draws Crowd at Harvard
The Harvard University Crimson ^ | Friday, May 06, 2005 | VICTORIA KIM

Certain topics seem to strike a chord with Harvard students—human rights, politics, and female orgasms.

Last night, over 200 students of all genders and sexual orientations lined up outside a jam-packed Adams Lower Common Room to attend a seminar on female orgasms.

Matie E. Fricker—a representative from the “sexuality boutique” Grand Opening—arrived with two plastic tub-fulls of sex toys, books, and safer sex supplies.

“You’re going to hear a lot about (crude reference to sexual intercourse deleted by rface) tonight,” she announced to the crowd.

During her two-hour presentation, Fricker criticized negative social perspectives on female orgasms and said there is a scarcity of terms for female masturbation in contrast to the hundreds for male self-pleasure.

“If you’ve never felt one, do it,” Ficker said. “Some people say it feels better than the Red Sox winning.”

Alexander J. Tennant ’08 said after the meeting that the taboo surrounding the female orgasm is problematic.

“It’s a shame that our society looks down upon female orgasms,” he said.

Holding a puppet vulva in one hand and a dildo in another, Ficker described the different parts of the female genitalia and demonstrated different ways to give the female body pleasure.

She also emphasized the importance of protection, introducing the students to a variety of equipment such as male and female condoms, and dental dams.

“Safer sex is hot sex,” said Ficker, who has been a safer-sex educator since 1996. “Once you get over the hump of incorporating safer sex in your life, it’s worth it,” Ficker told the crowd. “Empowerment is sexy.”

With her uninhibited talk about female orgasms, students soon became comfortable with the topic and started freely tossing out questions.

Another student asked her advice on condom brands, and Ficker suggested using Japanese condoms because they are thinner and safer.

“We could all use a little schooling on this stuff,” Virginia L. H. Schnure ’05 said.

Tennant said that he “learned a lot of techniques that will be very helpful in the future.”

One of the organizers of the seminar, Jenna M. Mellor ’08, said that females also need to learn about the topic.

“There are a lot of girls who aren’t orgasming,” said Mellor, who is also the special events coordinator for the Radcliffe Union of Students (RUS).

“Female orgasm is something that affects everybody. It’s a great way to procrastinate, to relax, to get to know people, and yourself,” Mellor added.

“All women should orgasm as much as they can,” Max J. Warren ’08 said. “A sexually satisfied world is a peaceful world.”

The event was co-sponsored by the Association of Black Harvard Women, the Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, and Supporters Alliance, Latinas Unidas, and RUS.

I guess Ivy Leaguers really have some hangups about sex, particularly female orgasms. Nice to know those of us in flyover country aren't so uptight.

We even subscribe to the notion that sex is important, a surrendering and a commitment to our spouse.

And we enjoy our orgasms.

Moral Absolutes Ping.

I hate to sully your Sunday morning with this vile trash (thankfully the poster left out one paragraph...) but anyone who is thinking of sending off his children to a center of higher education should find out what is being taught there.

Looks like most universities these days are hotbeds of this kind of detestable effluvia.

I don't even want to say anything more.

Let me know if you want on/off this pinglist.

I've got to take issue with this. I love looking down on female orgasms.

I guess that it depends on your position as to whether you are looking up or down.

Radcliffe Union of Students. Radcliffe is the girls' school that Harvard College coupled with 35 years ago.

"It's a shame that our society looks down upon female orgasms." Sigh. Ain't it the truth. I've never had one.

It just goes to show you that even the "high-minded" at Harvard have their minds in the gutter.

negative social perspectives on female orgasms

What????!!! What "perspective" does society have on the female orgasm??? I doubt that, aside from a few bored elitists, many people walk around pondering their mortgage, their kids' education, the dipstick they work for, and the female orgasm. It just isn't a subject that comes up much except in Harvard seminars and feminist sob sessions.

Holding a puppet vulva in one hand and a dildo in another ...

... Fricker proceeded to engage in an activity many conservatives have been urging on liberals for decades.

By the way, the puppet vulva was named Hillary Clinton and the dildo was Ted Kennedy.

I remember once a few years back I commented in a faculty meeting that I didn't see why we had to teach so many sex-drenched courses, since, all in all, sex is a fairly simple and straightforward matter. You should have heard all the groans and seen the rolling eyes. We have folks on our faculty who spend their lives writing books about this stuff.

Sorry, no doubt psychological perversions and kinks in sexulaity are endless, but I still think that sex is basically a fairly simple and straightforward matter. I can't understand why so many people want to spend so much time talking, reading about, and watching sex rather than simply doing it according to their particular lights.

Talking about sex is so repetitive and boring.

I can't get past the vulva puppet. I just wonder if it was the soft kind with little googly eyes she put her hand in and it talks like Lamb Chop?

Or she sat down with this wooden vulva on her lap and the vulva explains dildos while she drinks a glass of water?

That is the scary kind of evil puppet vulva. They are the ones that take on a life of their own and go out at night and kill people.
