Sorry for the vanity, but I need to know what to do when someone has falsely accused me of attempted assault....I know it sounds wierd but it just happened about 2 hours ago!
I was studying for finals today in the library of my campus and some ditzy gal comes in and sits across the room and starts talking on her cell phone... no big deal, but after a nearly a half hour it became really distracting, so I went over and asked her to "cut the talking, I'm actually trying to study here." ok, maybe not polite but it's true.
She's disgruntled, but ends her call. Minutes Later she starts up again, talking about some (&^%$) who keeps telling her stop talking on her cell phone, so I go over again, and ask her to "cut the crap or to go to the lobby if she wants to talk on the phone all day."
I'm back at my desk and shes muttering, cussing me out, etc. She then decides to leave, ok, problem solved I figure.
Next thing I know the library staff is up on the forth floor and they come over to me, and tell me to stay seated, they are callin the cops!
WTF?
Apparently the gal went downstairs and worked up a story on how there's a grad student lookin guy in jeans and a blue shirt on the fourth floor study hall that tried to attack her and pull her into the bathroom and assault her!
Sweet Christ!
Anyhow, it resolved itself real quick, because unbeknownst to the cell phone gal, there was a table of asians in the corner studying, she didn't know they were there, and the asian kids confirmed my version of events to the library staff.
Anyhow, by now I'M LIVID, and we go downstairs to confront the cell phone gal about this and she's taken off. WTF?
The library staff assures me that her story and behavior didn't really match up, she's left, and that I should just drop the matter, but I keep thinking-What if the asian kids hadn't been there to confirm my side of the story? I'd be in jail probably.
So I am wondering If there is anything I can do, or If I should just walk away from the whole wierd event like they advised me. I don't know what I actually can do, as she didn't stick around for the poilce, and nothing was actually reported to them. Still, I don't like the idea of someone wandering around saying I tried to attack them in the library....
Jeez, what a wierd experience, Sorry for the Vanity, but I'm still a little freaked out by the whole thing, and I wonder if I should plan on a visit from cops, or if this sort of thing happens so much that I just never realized it....Man, What a wierd day.
And to think, all I was trying to do today was work on the anti-federalist tradition in American history....hehe
File a complaint with the police or the university judicial office for her making the false accusation. Get the names of all the witnesses.
Did she file a false police report? That's bigtime illegal.
Have a drink, and write it off as One of Those Weird Episodes. And next time somebody's talking on a cell phone in the library, tell a librarian.
no she took off, I guess she figured that might be pushing it too far.
Wow, what a strange 2 hour period in my life...hehe.
and I'll probably just keep my mouth shut from now on....
Did the cops actually show up or did staff call 'em off ?
It's awfully hard to let go when you're livid.
I doubt I could were I in your situation.
I'd definitely file a report on her with the campus police.
That way, should she cross paths with you again, you're on record.
I agree with the others and add this: Write up what happened and send a copy to YOUR dean. This may sound like a chicken poop move but if this gal whipsaws again and comes at YOU in a few, there needs to be some sort of formal record. Because the library staff will be off doing other things and your other witnesses will be unavailable. But she will remember you. Get your story on the record.
The campus cops didn't ever show up, I don't know if anyone called them, but the library folks seemed to act like, "oh my, just a big mis-understanding, lets all get back to our studies."
apparently cell phone gal took off while we were upstairs and by the time we were downstairs no one knew what was going on, if she was serious, or just a freak out, the whole thing didn't make sense. Why would you go downstairs, claim you had been attacked, and then leave the library? It didn't make sense..
I left my info but the head lady there said not to worry, it was just a misunderstanding, seemed to take it in stride, as if this sort of thing happens all the time!
very wierd day
Then she wins. Call the cops and make sure they make a serious effort to catch her. She's guilty of at least slandering you.
that seems like a sensible thing to do, just to give the campus cops a heads up and a statement, and let them visit the library folks while things are fresh.....
And then I can let it be after that....what a bizarre event.
I've been called rude before, but no ones actually accused me of being a campus pervert...until today!
LOL! That ditz was a drama queen. She was in the wrong, but had to lie about it. Consider her poison, because she surely is. I'm female too... so I would have likely slapped her...lol.
Good luck and take care.
/.02
will do, it really can't hurt,
I doubt the ditz would ever push the matter, as looking back it all now seems like a spontaneous thing for her to say, and then she realized she might have overdone it, so she bolted.
Still, better to put everything on paper with the authorities just in case she decides to go full bore freak mode on me someday...
hey now....hehe
While not a true sports car, it is a stunning impression of one when stopped at a traffic light.
Once moving, well, there the illusion dies.....
Get your "filing a false report" complaint on record with the campus police ASAP. If she did it to you, the next poor schmuck might not be so lucky.
