Word For The Day, May 5, 2005, Thursday

Thursday, May 5, 2005

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

THAUMATURGE

Noun
Pronunciation: Thaw/my/turd . Oh, excuse me. Thaw/my/turj.
Etymology: [Greek thaumatourgos : thauma, thaumat-, wonder + ergon, work; see werg- in Indo-European Roots.]

1) A performer of miracles or magic feats.

Thank you, Arghie!!!

My buddy Howard would tell you that I am, of course, the other end of Mr. Ed.

Nope. I never go to those threads. I'm afraid that my five years in Mexico City would betray my heartfelt admiration for the average Mexican.

And it only took eight days in Cuba, in La Havana and in the back country for me to fall in love with the most beautiful, funny, and bitingly sarcastic Castro commentators in the world. National Healthcare my arse! In both countries people knowingly nod when someone goes into the hospital. It's assumed they will die soon.

I think they should all be LEGAL immigrants, but I don't blame anyone for wanting to be here instead of whatever S.A. hellhole they were unfortunate enough to be born in.

Clocks In Heaven

A man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. He asked, "What are all those clocks ?" St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move."

Oh," said the man, "whose clock is that one ?" "That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved, indicating that she's never told a lie."

"Incredible," said the man, "and whose clock is that one ?" St. Peter responded, "That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that old Abe only told two lies in his entire life."

"Where's Paul Martin's or Jean Chrétien's clock ?" asked the man.
"They're in Jesus' office. He's using them as ceiling fans."

i avoid the immigration threads.

So do I, for the same reasons you do. I would really like to see something done to stem the ILLEGALS but I have nothing against hispanic/spanish speaking. There are large pockets of both Quatamalans and Mexicans here and they are for the most part hard-working, law abiding, productive members of the community.

Unfortunately problems arise during the tomato planting (now) and harvesting seasons - but they occur primarily within the confines of the migrant camps.

My Aunt spent the better part of 25 years living and working in South and Central American countries and I have learned much of the cultures from her.

Until the French do something that makes them at least worthy of the air they breathe (waste), they should remain legitimate objects of scorn and derision.
Or maybe return some of their ill-gotten "oil-for-food" payola?

Hillary continues to prove herself a thaumaturge. This time she's turned herself into someone who appears to care about military families. And if you believe her, I may be able to interest you in purchasing a certain bridge connecting two of New York's boroughs...
