I am trying to block AIM from a computer. I have configured our router DLINK 614+ to block port 5190.
After I do so, I am unable to connect via a Dell Inspiron 5100 that runs XP Home.
However, a desktop computer on the same network STILL can access AIM. It also runs XP Home.
Are there other ports that AIM uses? Why is one computer unable to reach AIM and the other one is?
Is there a way I can tell which port the successful computer is using to reach AIM?
Thanks for any help. How else can I block AIM?
Run ZoneAlarm and forbid AIM to connect. You should be running ZoneAlarm anway, of course.
typo: anyway.
Thanks. I'd rather control access at the router, if I can. I assume that in using Zonealarm, I would have to install it at the PC in question?
You should be able to access the logs on the router and see what ports are outgoing from the machine you're trying to block. I'd guess that you just have something set up incorrectly in your rules.
Haha, she CHANGED THE PORT ON WHICH AIM CONNECTS lol...
At the main AIM screen is a pulldown for "preferences." There, you can change signon options, including an option for the port one connects to. She changed the port. But I know what it is and I changed my firewall rule accordingly lol.
Thanks.
Glad you caught it.
Do a Google for a free firewall called Outpost. Download it and install it on any PC you want to block AIM on. Done.
