How to restore a file from a memory key
me

Posted on 04/29/2005 10:42:22 AM PDT by Sub-Driver

I've accidentally deleted a Word file from one of my memory keys and it doesn't show up in the recycle bin. Anyone know of a way or tool I can us restore it?

There are programs to help with this. Try the manufacturer's website, then try cnet.com, utilities.

It's called "flash memory" for a reason.

It's gone.

It's gone.

Only if it's been overwritten. Memory cards are formatted like disks. When you delete a file you are deleting an index entry. If you don't write more stuff to the card the data will be recoverable. If you save more stuff before you realize what happened, chances are it's overwritten.

But to remark that memory as undelete, that is the problem.

Maybe there is a change. I used to get free programs form download.com to undelete files on floppy disks. I wonder if the same kind of program would work on a stick????

As I said in my first post, there are undelete programs for memory cards. The ones I know about aren't free, but there might be trial ones available to download. The important thing is not to use the card before getting gthe undelete program.

I'm basically pinging this thread in hopes that someone who has specific knowledge will see it.

On many flash memory devices, erasing a block takes longer than writing to an already-blank block (a block which has been written must be erased before it can be rewritten). Consequently, some flash file systems erase data blocks when the files containing them are deleted. I don't know about whethe any particular USB flash drives do this, but I don't think it's uncommon.
