It was still terrible. He left out all the good parts, and stretched the okay parts (Vogons) into a whole movie. The pointless back stories and meaningless details were given a perfunctory nod, even though the book would be nothing without them. I was waiting for the 'Spanish Inquisition' style argument with the philosophers during the questioning of Deep Thought, but they cut it out. And why was Zaphod such a jerk?

I didn't think Zaphod was a jerk, so much as just an ego maniac, which is what he was in the book. Are you sure you're remembering him correctly from the book?
