I hear lots of scrapping between the local cats and racoons, I have a tree stand beside my house, blood curdling noises though, not sure who wins those, never found a dead cat or racoon, must be a draw....

You are probably hearing cats court. When a tom is trying to mate with a female cat, they make such sounds and do a lot of scratching. (I guess Tom's mate only with female cats!):-)
