LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Britney Spears said on Tuesday she was pregnant with her first child, ending months of speculation over whether the pop princess was launching a new career as a mother.

Spears, 23, who married dancer Kevin Federline last September, made the announcement in a posting to fans on her official Web site.

"The time has finally come to share our wonderful news that we are expecting our first child together. There were reports that I was in the hospital this weekend. Kevin and I just want everyone to know that all is well. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Love Britney and Kevin," the brief posting said.

Spears became a world-wide pop phenomenon in the late 1990s when she shot to fame with her 1999 debut "...Baby One More Time." She has since sold more than 60 million albums.

"Looks like a missed a memo or two, what with all the horseplay in the news."

Is that a horseshoe in Camilla's hand? It looks like a diamond encrusted horse shoe. :)

Lets see, I think this is the third kid he has fathered in the last 18 months or so....

Everyone needs a hobby.

I think so, as well. She has worked herself half to death since she was a child. I think she is tired of the limelight and ready for a family.

I don't like her choice of a mate, but I'm not her and don't know all the background.

Some people simply feel they can get ahead in life by tearing others down. Sad.

shouldnt it be against some law for two dullards to get together and bring a kid into this world?

I don't think Chelsea would agree.

Well, they have enough money for them to raise the child without welfare.

No, Kevin wasn't married to the mother of his other two kids. Seems like he left/broke up with her while she was pregnant.

I just hope they realize it's an actual child they are responsible for and not like one of those yap-yap dogs they are constantly toting around.

I find the huge amount of negativity from so many fellow FReepers pretty disheartening. Sure, Britney is guilty of sin, but there are so many positives here:

She's long stated she wants to be a mommy. Usually those who want to be mommies and then become mommies make good mommies.

She is married to the father of her child.

She's not getting an abortion.

She canceled her tour and pretty much put her career on hold when she found out she was pregnant.

She'll probably forfeit her career now that she'll be a young mother.

She's very close to her mother, so her baby will have at least 1 good grandmother.

She enjoys being a stepmother. A good stepmother is much better than a bad stepmother.

Jesus thought for a moment and then replied, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.”

However, it seems FReepers hate successful people almost as much as the liberals hate successful people.

Oh yeah, she's a Bush supporter. That should earn the loyalty of the Bushbots here.

Whether it was intended that way or not, the wedding seemed to have taken on an equine theme.

Yes, beginning with her horse face.

I can't ever look at Britney without thinking of her stinkin' Feet story on the airplane.
If you want to understand a little about her look up the story from her ex-husband of 18 hours and his re-telling of their pre-wedding night bliss. Very interesting.

Dude...

Where on Earth do you get the number of 50MM? Prove it by citing some authoratative evidence or just stop making up numbers. GWB only rec'd 62MM votes in the last election, US census figures total population of approxinately 280MM people. Is this slut a heroine to 15% of the polulation as you claim? I don't think so but prove me wrong.

Depends on the advice she receives from Madonna.

Madonna will give her a piece of her tongue that's for sure.
