FReeper dog lovers: This little guy needs help urgently
4/11/05 | Wolfstar

FReeper dog lovers, this little male Chihuahua mix (about 15 lbs.) desperately needs either a good, loving home or a foster home until I can find him a permanent situation.

On Good Friday evening, I spotted this little guy in a blind panic at a very busy intersection in the city of Gardena, CA, a Los Angeles suburb. He paused a moment, then took off running down Gardena Blvd. I made a U-turn and did everything possible to try to catch up to and get ahead of him in an effort to save him. But he kept going.

He turned north on an ever bigger, busier street and kept running. In all, he easily ran at least two miles from where I first saw him. Finally, he ran into a major intersection that feeds to and from the Harbor Freeway. The traffic made him pause a moment, then he tried running with the traffic and got clipped by a car. (Fortunately, he was not hurt severely; just a skinned patch on his forehead.)

As luck (or God) would have it, there was a police car crossing in the direction the dog went. Either the cop car or the one in front of the cops hit the dog. Because the cops stopped, all traffic stopped. Otherwise traffic would have just kept going, and the little guy would have been hit multiple times.

I had parked about a block away and went running over to find this little dog flopping around in the street with a male and a female cop standing over him seeming to not know what to do. I immediately scooped the little fellow up and told the cops where I first saw him. They asked, "Can you take care of it?"

So they brought me back to my car. Although it was about 7:30pm, I just took a blind shot and brought him to the nearest animal shelter where I happen to know one of the officers. Again, as luck (or God) would have it, this officer had not yet gone home. He arranged for vet care over the weekend and then picked the little dog up Monday. The dog has been in the pound ever since.

There are numerous dog rescue organizations in your area, probably even one for the breed in particular.

I've already contacted Chihuahua rescue and other rescue orgs. He's a mixed breed, although definitely part Chi. So breed rescue is out. All of the reliable private shelters I've contacted are full. Spring is the most difficult time of year for them.

Thanks. I sure will. Even if you know of someone who would foster him for a little while, just to buy time as I look for a permanent home. Will keep in touch.

Thanks, cyborg. I'll give it a shot. The Chi rescue group I contacted here wouldn't take him because he's not a purebred.

He looks like an old dog in the pictures and my friend wants one for her young son. A young dog or a puppy would be better. I hate to think what a 4 hour trip in the baggage compartment would do to your dog's nerves. Why can't you keep him? I can't think of how many dogs I have rescued and *kept* in my life.

Bumping for a miracle.

It was a miracle that God put me in position to rescue this little dog on Good Friday. Also a miracle that the dog was not killed when he was hit before I could scoop him up. A miracle that police car was right there to stop traffic, and another miracle that the little fellow was not hurt seriously. Now all he needs is one more miracle.

Why can't you keep him?

Please read the background info I posted. It explains why. Until I moved a year ago, there would be no question I'd keep him. But it's impossible now. I live in a 800-sq-ft house with a small patio that's not even as wide as your typical office cubicle. I have two dogs of my own. One is a fragile 15-yr-old and the other is a pit bull I rescued five years ago. I have zero room to keep the new dog separated from them.

I bet it stopped your heart to see him get hit. I've chased dogs in traffic too, and had my heart take a leap for close calls.

He is a beautiful dog, looks very sweet. There must be dozens of rescue/humane societies in your area with 100s of families pouring in over weekends to find a new family pet.

Here in the Chicago area there are so many. We found a sweety at this one in Naperville last Nov 03.

So wonderful of you to help him. Hope you find a wonderful place for him. If we were closer......

You have a wonderful, compassionate heart. It was great of you to follow and then care for that terrified dog. Also put me in for a financial donation if needed.

I live in Texas and have served on the board of directors of our local Humane Society. We have a list of members who foster-home adoptable dogs and cats. If you haven't already, try your local Humane Societies and inquire if they have foster volunteers. I'd offer to take the dog, but like you, the poor thing wouldn't fit in to my current mix of pets.

I heard it, but didn't actually see it. Yes, it sure did stop my heart. When he turned north, he was on a street with a median. So I drove like a near maniac trying to get ahead of him. I made a U-turn and started going down the other side -- the one he was running along -- but just missed him. So I parked and began running after him. I saw him go into the intersection, turn to his left, then lost sight of him as the westbound light changed and the cars started coming through the intersection. The rese I've explained above.

I thought for sure that I'd see a dead dog, and was surprised to find that all he had was a bump on the head.
