FWIW, the vet tells us that in dogs, relief is highly individuallistic-- some behave like a much younger dog, others get no relief at all.

I've heard the same thing. I've also heard that some think it works better in dogs than in people (don't know why that would be). Everyone (and every species ) is different, guess the only way to know for sure if it works for each person/animal is to try it. It's mostly harmless stuff, too, so if it doesn't work the only thing lost is the money to buy it...

I'm really happy it works for the animals in my family (dog and DH ).

I just read about that in the NY Daily News yesterday, Wednesday. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/297162p-254226c.html I've read it elsewhere, I'm going to try it.

and they think Teresa Heinz Kerry is nuts for believing in that http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/245654p-210237c.html

Gin-Soaked Raisins for Arthritis

We don't know why it works but many readers swear this remedy relieves arthritis pain. Ingredients: golden raisins and gin. Empty the raisins into a bowl and pour in just enough gin to cover the raisins. Allow the gin to evaporate (about one week) and then place the moist raisins in a jar with a lid. Eat nine raisins a day. They go well on cereal!

That's right. Must be golden raisins, and always nine per day.

I wonder if it's an urban legend. Not eight or ten but nine.

The veterinarians have been using it successfully for 30 years on animals with great success. Sure beats getting a heart problem using bextra.

The stuff is a godsend, and my husband and I swear by it. We are not nutjobs, I promise.

So here's the deal. My husband had a bacterial infection in his spine when he was a teenager. It left him with arthritis in his back. I have suffered a couple of serious falls, which have messed up my lower back. I also was in a wreck ten years ago (NOT my fault!), that reversed the curve in my neck. I now have bone spurs and arthritis in my neck. As bad as all that sounds, we are only 35. G/C really has worked miracles for us. When we take it, we have no problems at all.

go here to see which brands where tested... (click link)
http://www.consumerlab.com/results/gluco.asp

What CL Found:
Among the products that ConsumerLab.com selected and tested, problems were found only among combination products, four of which were low in chondroitin sulfate — a particularly expensive ingredient. These four products are listed as "Not Approved" in the table below and had the following short-comings:
One product, for human use, claimed to contain 500 mg per serving of "Chondroitin sulfate complex" which ConsumerLab.com's testing showed to contain less than 90 mg of chondroitin sulfate — only 18% of the 500 milligrams. ConsumerLab.com has cautioned consumers in the past to be wary of supplements with ingredients that include words such as "complex," "formula," or "blend" when the weight of each component is not listed. While it may be legal for a manufacturer to use these terms, ConsumerLab.com often finds such information misleading to consumers.
A second product for human use contained less than 85% of its claimed chondroitin sulfate.
Shockingly, no chondroitin sulfate could be detected in two pet supplements despite each displaying a "guaranteed analysis" showing a significant amount of chondroitin sulfate. [Update — 7/21/04: A new, re-formulated version of one of the pet supplements that did not pass was subsequently tested at the request of manufacturer. It passed testing and is listed below].

I'd read about the studies, and tried it. Gave me joint pain all over. But that figures, I usually fall in that "reported by less than 1 per cent of study" group.

Whoops. I meant to add, what does work for me is liquid minerals (the colloidal, trace mins). Takes a couple of weeks to work, then one morning, no more "uhhh" sound as I get out of bed. ;')

I've always wondered if it was the gin - it hurts, but you don't notice ;) .

“We both recently starting taking MSM, too - a lot of companies compound all 3 into 1 pill”

YES - just bought some Rexall brand at Dollar General today - not only is it glucosamine, chrondroitin and MSM, but it also has collagen and vitamin C and manganese! Labeled as triple strength - a month’s worth was $7.50.
