Error Leads to 'American Idol' Revote

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The 11 contestants left on Fox's reality hit "American Idol" are getting another shot at stardom.

Phone numbers that allowed viewers to pick their favorite contestant were incorrectly displayed during Tuesday's show, prompting a re-vote during the show scheduled to air Wednesday, the network said in a statement.

Phone lines will remain open for two hours following the episode, when another singer will be booted off this week by viewers. The contestant with the fewest votes goes home.

In the running are Bo Bice, Anthony Fedorov, Constantine Maroulis, Anwar Robinson, Scott Savol, Nikko Smith, Mikalah Gordon, Jessica Sierra, Vonzell Solomon, Nadia Turner and Carrie Underwood.

The series, which is in its fourth season, draws nearly 30 million viewers an episode.

"Oh come on, have some fun!! I bet you'll read what AOL has to report:
""""'American Idol' Phone Foul-Up Forces Revote

By Gary Susman, Entertainment Weekly
FOX
The 'Idol' top 11 contestants will have a second chance. The results show will now air Thursday night.

Fox has accidentally stumbled onto a way to squeeze an extra airing of American Idol onto its schedule: foul up the phone voting. That's what happened Tuesday night, when the show displayed the wrong call-in numbers for three of the contestants. Voters who called the numbers listed for Anwar Robinson, Mikalah Gordon, or Jessica Sierra would have inadvertently registered support instead for Anthony Fedorov, Carrie Underwood, or Scott Savol. As a result, the error is forcing the first revote in Idol history.

Fox said in a statement that it would air a new hour-long Idol episode Wednesday night, adding that the show "will combine new live elements with encores of Tuesday's performances from the remaining 11 contestants." Fans will then be allowed to call in their votes on Wednesday night, while Tuesday's votes will be tossed out. The results show that usually airs Wednesdays will then air on Thursday. This may prove an awkward solution, but it beats getting the Supreme Court involved.

In a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, Idol producer Ken Warwick said that this solution -- airing new live comments from Ryan Seacrest and the judges around the taped performances from Tuesday's show -- would not only be less "boring" than a complete rerun of the performance episode, but was also "the only way the whole thing can be fair." He said that, as soon as Fox alerted producers to the mistake, all the votes were discarded, and no one involved in the production knew what the tally had been. He didn't say who would eat the cost of the re-vote, but callers and text-message users won't be charged for last night's votes. As for the cause behind the misprinted phone numbers, Warwick blamed "human error" but said the mistake was made by an outside contractor. He said he didn't know whether the man responsible was fired or not but said, "We probably won't see him in the building anymore."

Using Dame's numbers (1%=about 0.6 million), and the size of the U.S. population (206 in 1970), we can calculate that the size of a household was 206/60, or about 3.6.

That does not guarantee everyone in the household was watching the show though.

No, it doesn't. But with very few households with multiple televisions, it probably does mean a respectable multiplier.

Given the 10pm show time I would bet you could at most argue for 2x the households figure, and that would be a stretch.

... I am not really into country ...

Where else can you find lyrics like these?:

"You're the reason our kids are ugly." ... or ... "Your wife is cheatin' on us again." ... or ... "I gave her the ring, she gave me the finger." ... or ... "We used to kiss each other on the lips, but it's all over now." ... or ... "I don't know whether to kill myself or go bowling." ... or ... "I bought those shoes that just walked out on me."

LOL! Well I do have a level of appreciation for the lyrics.

I like Billy Ray Cyrus, mostly because he's a Christian and I loved his TV program Doc. So I bought his gospel cd. But coutry music doesn't do much for me overall.

Love Anwar, he seems like a genuine nice guy. Wish he would sing Bob Marley, Redemption Song or No Woman No Cry

Love Bo,,the best musician in the group

Carrie is erratic and sometimes dull. No spark. I like her when she sticks to country.

Nadia is uniformly great except for last nite.

constantine needs a good bath, lipo on his waddley neck, a hair wash and some mousse on his hair. He is smarmy.

I like Nico altho he is out of his league.

vonzell, oh well

I detest Mikaleh and want her gone.

Scott gives me the major creeps. It may be wrong but to be an Idol you have to be passably good looking. I can't get beyond his serial killer look. Last nite when he sang "Look at me Now" I was screaminig, "No, don't make me do it, bring back Mikaleh"

Bo versus Nadia or Carrie in the final. Bo wins.

Oops, forgot Jessica who is awesome but too chunky to be Idol. If you are chunky, you gotta be a guy. And she is as tad slutty, barfly looking.

7 - "Never watched "American Idol"...
Never will... "

Too bad. I watched it the other nite for the first time, and some of the performances are really quite good, if you ignore the stupidity of the 'contest'.

Why did she leave the scene after hitting someone? I would never have suspected she was like that. I guess her sweetness is all an act.
