Here's to good progress on the barn ~and~ to getting a turkey when you get home

I ought to combine turkey huntin with ridin. I don't know if they got turkeys where you are and how much you've been around them, but they are very wary birds. They'll come to you if you're real still and well concealed but it's almost impossible to walk up on them. So, last year I was riding through a place where I sometimes hunt and walked right up on 4 hens and a big ol' tom and they didn't seem the least bit nervous until we got about 20 feet away and then they flew away.

We don't have turkeys here, or native pheasant for that matter, but I have hunted pheasant at game dept release areas. I think it's too wet for their young to survive planted adults live, but they don't reproduce enough to keep a population.

I've also seen turkeys from horseback on the mule ride through Arizona years ago. My dad used to hunt them when we lived down there.
