The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey, just thought I'd say that I'm waiting for Di to get back. I was told to reassure you so here I am...

I'll be OK, you know flying isn't that bad. Too bad you're afraid of heights

LOL.

Thanks Di and Bruce for the wonderful time!!

Just think, great, great, grandpap might have hauled timber or mercury up to the Comstock mines, or silver out of someplace like Mineral Hill :-)

BTW, people who shoot wild horses for fun go to hell...

:) I think all my horse related injuries have come from babies. You're right, you never know how much they know or don't know if it's not one of yours.

I hope so! ;o)

Oh, I think that line of Spanish bloodline Mustangs are called "Keiger Mustangs".

Are they Kiger? Or Steen?

I know that there's one 'strain' of mustang blood has one less spinal vertebrae than the others.

Not too long ago, I happened to stumble across an article that discussed the BLM management of the mustang herds.

Most people, (like me) think(thought) that the BLM was gathering/managing those horses for the 'good' of the herds.(to keep them from over populating/starving)

But the average size of those herds are 75-80 head...per hundreds/thousands of acres.

Next time you're in Nevada let me know. I love showing off my horses and we still have a few wild horses left around us. BLM and state are trying mightily to get them all but the ones left are pretty wise.

Contra Costa, huh? Don't you all know it's going to fall into the ocean one of these days. I grew up in Santa Clara County.

You're right, I guess all the ones I've messed with have been mine. Even then, they can get a little sassy.

Few questions to get your opinions.

I just got back from riding Rusty, we rode about 1 hour 15 minutes, all at a walk at his pace, with some hills. His stifle (I feel pretty much that is the problem) locked up 3 times.

1. Is that too long, should I go longer??

2. Should I do this every day, or skip days? By everyday, I mean about 5 days a week.

Becky, if it was me, I would give him exercise everyday. If he gets stronger, it might resolve the problem. That is unless, he would lock up more. Try that exercise, I mentioned. I am interested in seeing what happens. It's been a long time since I saw that done, and cannnot remember excatly how the horse reacted. I think it will lock him up. You pretty much have that pinpointed thou.

It probably wouldnt hurt to put some linament on too. That has to make his muscles sore too, even thou it's a joint problem.

My co-worker has been on the phone with those people from the woman to woman web site for over an hour....lol

Babies have to learn to trust. Their first responce is to panic and fight anything strange. It's easier if they've been around you since day one and have learned you won't hurt them, but those that haven't been handled can be little hellions.

Then there's always the babies that have been treated like big dogs and haven't learned they can't climb in your lap, bite on your arm, or treat you like a toy. :) I'm always hesitant grabbing the lead of a baby I don't know and that doesn't know me. Adult horses have pretty much learned the limits and the basics of ground manners.

The every day routine sounds good to me. Maybe cut him back to 30min and see if he does better, then work him on up from there. We're all just guessing here. You'll just have to experiment with him and see if he gets better or worse.

Hi - I am home from dropping ~Bo~ at the airport! She's on her way! - almost! :~D We had kindof a quick goodbye, I messed up getting into the right lane at the airport so I ended up at "Departure drop off" where I couldn't park. I thought time might be tight (it was 9:30 for a 11:00 departure) so I dropped her right at the SouthWest check-in gate and told her I'd go park and meet her in the security line. Well, there was no line at all, so she was through already in the 5 minutes it took me to park. I told her not to wait for me if she got through before I got there!

Her plane should take off in five minutes, and the weather here is good! I tried the flight tracker, but it's showing the wrong flight. SW's website shows that it should depart on time.

When it locks up, how long does that last? Just a step or two or longer? Any sign of discomfort when it happens?

I will try the excerise. Thanks.

Be sure to let me know what your co-worker says those people say, and what she thinks. I've never talked to anyone one, just ordered their stuff and read the web site.

The three times he locked up were all pretty close together at about the halfway point of the ride. The last 30 minutes it never happened.

And I know you all are just guessing as am I:), I just wanted some "opinions" I think sometimes, talkng to a bunch of knowledgeable hores people gives you more info to work with then the vet. Experience is more valuable then book learning:) IMO.

No it dosen't seem to be painful. At the walk he is able to stop as soon as it locks, so he isn't pogo sticking on one back leg like happened yesterday when I was at the trot and it happend.

Today when it happened, he'd hold the leg up for a second or two, shake it a bit, then pull it up as high as he could then just walk on. So the whole incident only lasts a few seconds.
