*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Both or just one? I figured I straightened the other by mounting.

Well, it's the same in that it's synthetic. I don't think he has particular trouble for better or worse with it. The left on you hold onto getting in, the right one, we all have to fish around for.

My English saddle, the stirrups are just on long straps, they sit flat too, and I have to kind of fish around for it.

You might want to look at some endurance stirrups - not that they will lay any better but they are more comfortable and easier to step into.

Those would be more comfortable where my feet get sore from a more narrow stirrup pad.

I think they'd look a little funny on my English saddle, but if comfort ever completely overtakes vanity, I'd try it ;~D

He does have a very nice headset, he will lope around very nicely with out a tie down. Tie downs are not necessary when your trotting and loping around in nice controled show ring. I was told there would be 100 people at this ride. Even with 25 you never have a clue what's going to happen. I've had my nose bloodied, lip busted open from a horse that was good, spooking when another horse spooked and threw her head back and bashed me in the face.

As far as Jenny accident, it was not caused by the tie down, the tie down did not make it worse, it did not hinder her from getting up, she was not in deep enough water for it to be a problem.

A friend of mine found some stirrups that have a swivile attatchment to the stirrup leathers so they hang out rather then against the horse. They were designed for people with bad knees. Suppose to help. You might try a google search for them, but I don't know what they are called. They will go on any saddle. If you can't find them and are interested let me know I'll ask her about them.

I've now got boots on.... now I just need something to happen to get me out the door to mow ;~D

The mares are laying down right by the gate opening... If I went out there now with the mower, I'd certainly disturb them.

We are being blessed with rain today too, and our pastures, vegetable garden and flower beds are in desperate need of it. The kids have decided to go out and see who can get the mudiest! My washer and dryer both went wrong this weekend (as well as the well, GRrr!) but deaconjim has got them fixed so the kids are good to go and mess up as much as they want! : )

I bet you are glad of the rain in your line of business! : )

With that many riders, you sure don't know what can happen. Some people think it's great fun to "yahoo" around others. I have been to rides, where bridles were pulled off, and riders pushed off in creeks. I don't blame you for being cautious.

One of the horses, I rented in Tennessee had a tie down on. I found why when we trotted. That mare's head was almost in my lap even, with a tie down. That is why I questioned you, I knew Harley didn't travel like that.
