This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I normally don't trail ride with a tie down, I do use one for arena work. I put it on him yesterday because I was told there would be 100 people, I was taking him to a strange place, lots of unknowns. I wanted to make sure, I would have good control. I realize tie downs do not train a horse, but in some circumstances they do give the rider a bit of an advantage.
One thing I would like to know:), why not?
Becky
You mentioned the other day about looking for the pony up there, but I had no idea you never found her! Wow... She must have been found by somebody eventually, I'd think.
I only hope that someone did find him, and he did not founder and die, or coytoes got him. There was difinitly enough grass up there to founder the little guy:(
Becky
I'd agree, although today they let me sleep in till 7!
It's raining out at the moment... bummer. I was gonna start mowing pasture today. Was nice all weekend, but I didn't want to waste ecurbh home time on that. ;~D
Did you mention it to the owner yesterday?
At the time the horse got loose, it was owned by this mans father, he is dead now and the son has inherited. I asked the present owners son if he remembered his grandfather talking about a lost pony up there, and he said yes. That they did keep an eye out for the horse for a long time after that.

Sorry for the rain. It is beautiful here today. But I have every intention of staying in and gettting the house in order. Harley looks like he needs a day off anyway. When I went out to feed this morning, he was penning his ears at Rocky and Rusty as he walked past them up to his feed bucket:). I think he may be a bit grumpy. I let him out in the front yard to graze this morning. Maybe that will improve his mood.
Becky
We've been feeding Bay his grain in the yard since they've been staying out, because he's learned Cyn gets more and he switches with her. She doesn't need his pills and he doesn't need the extra grain so I feed him in the yard. I'd let him stay and graze awhile after he's done, but he decided to raid the bird seed instead, so out he went.
We do have to get to a common measurement of riding. Since you measure in hours, and I usually estimate in mileage, and don't keep track of the time, I have a hard time picturing and comparing!
Bay definately has a loose shoe in the back... Farrier is scheduled to come Friday. I left a message with him asking him to come early if he had any openings. You think he'll call me back? ;~D
True enough... in a month it'll be dry and we'll wish for it. We haver ~not~ had a dry spring, however :~D
If he is a normal farrier:), NO.
Becky
I didn't like my chances either... I'm livin' in a dream world.
That was a beautiful area that you rode in yesterday. I'm glad to hear that Harley tied to a trailer. Maybe tying with another horse helps him.
I think that had a lot to do with it. I really do.
Becky
On an earlier picture of Harley you posted, I thought he was loping so nicely. Looking back at the profile page, it does look like, he has a tie down on. You know your horse the best, to make the decision to use one. I just didn't think, he was the type of horse to need one. I am not being critical about it. I am so glad you had a good time and he was a good boy. In a situation like your daughter got into, I sure would not want a tie down on my horse.
How are you getting your stirrups to "mind" you. I can get my left foot in really easy but I have to bend over to get my right one in place. I wish I could just slip my foot in.
Isn't your saddle synthetic fabric on the stirrups? I don't think you can train yours, if it is.
New leather saddles, that are stiffer, you can twist them out and stick a broom handle through the stirrups to train them to hold a better position.
Yeah it's synthetic. I have twisted the velcro straps all kids of ways but it still wants to lay beside the horse.
Yeah - that's what I thought... ecurbh's is the same way.
