This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Not really. I keep entering data, and it keeps crashing. So frustrating. They emailed me, and said it was fixed. NOT! If I knew for sure, they would not be monitoring, I would just surf the rest of the day. Might as well, can't seem to get anything else done. Double time today too. ;')
I just loved your photos of the country side. No wonder you love it there so much. It's beautiful! How are the new additions doing? The older horses, I mean, not the babies. You still have them? How is the reading coming? Did you get those all done, and want more? LOL
He is so very well trained that the slightest touch gets a response and he's been able to do everything she's asked him. The sorrel is also well trained but at 25 still wants to go (an ex-gaming horse that doesn't know he's 25)
Just about through all the reading, I'll have to send a label for some more - MEDIA RATE or LIBRARY RATE to the office here.
We're still waiting on the last baby, we've reached the "any day now" point. The gentleman that we bought Sonny from (our stud) came down to see the first of his babies this weekend. He is so proud. He just went on and on about how good Sonny looked, how he had told everyone he knew about his two endurance rides and his placing, etc. etc. He came near tears talking about him and all his plans for him that went awry. And DIL was duly impressed that his name is in the book on the history of the Tevis Cup - he completed one in 1970 :)
the storm didnt arrive last night, we are told we should have one today. Glad you are ok.
I have recently remodelled our chicken house to give them more protection and we were given some more young hens yesterday. We put them in and shut the house for the night. Tight.
Unfortuatly now we have a red fox that is persistent in killing our chickens. He pulled the chicken wire away from the frame on the house and got in, killing 5 of my new chicks. Only one left.
We are sadly going to have to do something drastc, like get a trap.
We know it is not the pit bull as he has been kept on a double chain ever since i tried to shoot him and they heard the shot! I have also seen this fox.
BTW I love to watch storms too! So do all my kids!~

You have the worse luck with chickens.
He competed in endurance all over the west for many years, owned Sonny's dam, granddam and grandsire. He hauled Sonny's dam and granddam from California to NH to be bred to First Secretary, hoping for the perfect endurance horse and/or with luck a race horse. The granddam absorbed, the dam of course had Sonny.
About that time, the man was in the middle of divorce number two or three and so boarded Sonny because he didn't have a place anymore where he could keep horses. While being boarded, some kids (older kids) threw a rock at Sonny, hit him square in the forehead and knocked him unconscious. The vet said he had a severe concussion, multiple hairline fractures radiating out like a star and survival was iffy. Then when he was three, he got cast in a pen and seriously injured one of his front legs. He did that again when he was four and there was doubt that he would be sound for any heavy riding at all.
He was bred to three mares over this period of 14yrs, two foals wear solid colored and one had one spot. I believe these were quarter horse mares.
Anyway, we came along when he was fourteen (last year), skinny, depressed and having spent most of his life in a 24X24 pen. The man could no longer afford to pay his board nor able to drive down to see him often due to ill health so had to sell him. Now he's fat and happy, running endurance and has placed in the top ten on both of his rides so far, has one beautiful baby with color on the ground so the man sort of figures that all of his dreams for Sonny are finally coming true. Very sweet old gentleman. So he has to brag to everyone about it :)

Wow, I had a connection when I got home. For now at least. I hit a heck of a storm coming home. Little bit of hail too, now the sun is shining.

You are so right, it is a wonderful Country. I still cannot get over how much it varies from state to state! We may live our dreams this year, if not we will try for next year, just as soon as we can!
I have freinds that cannot believe that I will up sticks and move all the way to another state, then I have to remind them that my last major move was across the Atlantic! LOL I do remind them that it will give them a place to head for on a vacation though! : )
We got back about 45 minutes ago. I am dead tired but we had a blast. I had no idea there was such incredibly beautifull land in OK, let alone almost in my back year. Of course I ran out of room on my camera at the prettiest spot, but I got about 25 pictures. There was probably only about 25 people. We rode over there, and that took about an hour 10 minutes. Signed in, then went on a 2 1/2 hour ride, then back to camp for a lunch break, then back out for about 3 hours, then back to camp then the hour and 10 minute ride back home. Been awhile since I spent that much time in the saddle, but I feel great, and we got NO rain. Beth, the neighbor that took us to the starting point, quit the ride at the half way point, but I was pretty sure I could find my way home so we stayed the whole day, Jenny, Celia and I.
The people who own this ranch are incredibly nice. In their 60's. It's a working cattle ranch. On one place you can stand in 3 counties at one time. Any way, I'm going to go get the pictures loaded so I can post.

I forgot to mention that Harley and Dot were absolutely perfect the whole day. We were at a pond one time and Dot and gone in a ways to get a drink and when she came out she slipped in the mud and went down. Jenny got out from under her before she hit. it's kind of funny she fell OUT of the pond rather then in. One side of Dot was covered in mud, but Jenny didn't get anything on her. Jenny actually got the giggles laying on the ground.
But I was very proud of both our horses, they just went along the whole way, no boogers, or bad behavior. They are very tired tho. We climb some pretty good hills.

She very nearly took a bath eh? Glad she got out from under it. I've always worried about them slipping, especially in creeks where they are walking on round baseball sized rocks... it seems hard for anyone to keep footing and I've often wondered if I was gonna take a bath ;~D
This pond didn't have any rocks, but the edge was muddy clay, very slippery, but when they sink in it it's like glue. I don't think it bothered Dot in the least. She didn't come up all in a panic. She actully laid there and took her time getting her feet under her good, then just stood up easy. walk a few steps then stopped till Jenny got over to her.

I am so glad you all had such a great time. I know that if I spent that long in the sadlle i would be walking bow legged for days! LOL
I was brave today and moved Sugar from one field to another all by myself. I know it doesnt seem like much but remember it was only just over a year ago when I was terrified of horses and wouldnt go anywhere near them!
She was great for me and patiently waited for me to close the gate before she moved!
I am trying to locate another farrier as we still havent heard back from the one who was supposed to call us : ( All of the horses desperatly need trimming and Sugar has a low split which I dont want to get worse.
I have also been browsing real estate, looking at some beautiful farms in the Ozarks. Makes me want to take a vacation now! : D
