This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Oh good for you:) I love to mow:)
I got a call from Beth a few minutes ago. Her and her husband are riding from their house to the starting point of the Mon. ride. Timing it to see what time we need to leave to get there Mon. They invited me to go. I probably will but, do I want to take Harley so he is familiar with the place before all those horses get there, or let him rest and take Rock???
I really think he will be fine, even in a crowd, so I think I'll take Rock.
Becky
It would be interesting to know whether you'd be bringing undo risk without if you moved them now. let me know what you find out. I bet there's good information available online too, if you searched around.
Is it all fenced and ready? Is there a barn there and everything?
Have a good ride... we got the lawn mowed and now we are going to veg for awhile and maybe groom horses later.
Glad your kids are out of that place! As for gas prices, I could not believe the prices when I came here, I was paying the equivelent of $5.50 a gallon 4 years ago!
We traded in a durrango for a toyota sienna van, it has all the luxuries including dvd and side air bags etc and gets great mielege. On top of that the kids love it! So do we. Best thing we ever did!
Now I feel bad. I would never want to get any other horses sick. I'm gonna corner my vet Tue. I may even try to call A/M. The thing is that if they can contaminate an environment then how could they ever leave where they are at if it's there? It's a done deal now though. It's just up to us how long we wait. I can't make double payments a long time though.
sorry to be so long to reply, we were running some more fence to give the mares some extra grazing.
Your photos are lovely. Like you, I love to garden. I used to grow vegetables right alongside my cottage garden plants, i never had trouble with weeds because there wasn't any space for them! LOL Here I have the problem that the ground is so hard, it's like digging in cement! Whew! When we move further north I really hope to be able to find the time to garden more. I used to help my friend run her nursery and learnt so much there. It was fun but hard work.
It's a balance, I am sure it doesn't survive forever anywhere, even where they are. If it did, it'd be everywhere, like flus and tetanus, and it would just be one of the environmental things we immunize for. Horses certainly aren't bound to be quarantined because they've had this illness... I mean... I know for a fact they aren't. Horses are probably leaving and showing out of the barn you're in now.
Fenced yes but I want it doubled with hot wire since it is bob wire. My BIL wants to fence off 4 acres for them right now. Barn? We are arguing about that right now. I would rather take my time and have things perfect. DH doesn't want to throw away more money and wants me to make it work within a month. He says what I have there I have here minus the hot wire.
Glad you got your mower running, we had to take ours to the john deere place too and left $415 poorer. I could not believe the price!
Does that mean there is a barn or isn't one? Where would you store feed and supplies out there? You should go out there and take pictures. How far is it? Would you eventually move there for the short term too, or just keep horses there...
Is your BIL a horseman with skills already or is he new to it?
I'd definately put up hot wire to start, and over time replace the barbed wire with more hot wire and/or field fence of some kind... and use the heavy gauge stuff too.
Ours is just a push mower... that much money would buy a new one! :~D
At our next place, we'll have a nice rider.
Just to let you know that was rose posting, i logged back on while she was out of the room : )
We never know who we've got with you two ;~D
Neither do I! I logged on, went to get a coke, came back, answered posts and he says he is logged in, I didnt even notice, with the kids, there are always a hundred and one things going on here!
It is 92 outside. We just got finished with the new fencing and noticed our well has quit working, needs a new part which deaconjim has gone to get. The pool is really cold as we have only just filled it, but I am tempted to dive in anyhow! : D
There isn't a barn but a barn near that I can temp use to store feed if I need to. It's several hours away. It would be weekend commuting for now which is what we had decided on since we couldn't find anything around here. It's very pretty and isolated. If we don't eventually move there which is probably what will happen it will still be ok. My payments are lower than my boarder fee and everytime we go up there we drop 100 dollars on motels anyway so now we will just stay in the 5th wheel. We have 14 acres with access to another 20 of pasture.
Yall "talk" different though. I can usually tell who's who?:') You see what we just did?
Well, there's good and bad about it then... Too bad it's so far.
I've got some tomatoe plants growing this year. Mack wanted me to put them in the flower garden but I didn't want to. My chickens did peck of few of them down to the ground, but they came back and seem to be doing fine. Even have a few blooms already.
I've planted full vegetable gardens before, and enjoyed doing it. But just don't want to anymore.
Becky
I havent read all the posts, got a lot going on here with the well not working : (.
You have bought a place? WOW! Congratulations! Somewhere to go relax and ride at the weekends until you maybe build?
