*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, I didn't know you had a vet so close by!

It was all worth it

Sometimes I wonder. It's wonderful to have nice things, but then again, look what he gave up. My dad worked day and night too. My brother and I hardly knew him. We always had nice vacations and never wanted for much. But, like your husband, he reaped the rewards of all those years, of hard work.

I don't want to forget to credit you also, for all your hard work. It was not easy raising those kids and keeping a household up either....good job, all of you!

I was figuring the cost of hauling vs, the vet coming here. It probably costs about $4 in gas round trip, to go to the vet I'm using today. But I use to use a vet a lot farther away. When I used him back when I had 4 horses to get there for yearly stuff, I scheduled them to take 2 at a time a week apart. If I had to do that now with the gas prices, it might be just as economical to have him come here, except he didn't make house calls:).

Another advantage to taking a horse to the vet is they usually have stocks to put the horse in, which restrains them enough that they don't have to be tranquilized to do what ever has to be done. Saves money on that too. My old vet very very seldom tranquilized. He'd float teeth and everything. If vets come to your place to do that, they always tranquilize.

It's a shame he isn't close enough where you could ride to get there.

That way, you could ride AND take care of the vet stuff at the same time. :-D

We had people that floated who were separate from our vet. They never tranquilized, but then again they were sturdy guys and could take a knock or two.

"She" :) would be close enough to do that, but far enough that taking two, unless you ponied one which I would not be comfortable doing that distance, would take forever:)

I guess there is a fine line to figure on what is best, and most economical.

"She"? Oops!

I'm so used to Hair talking about her hunky vet-dude, that I've got man on the brain whenever vet's are discussed.

LOL!

I've heard of people who specialize in teeth floating. I've heard alot of farriers do it. I haven't found one around here that does it tho. I'll have the vet check Harley's today. I try to get all that stuff done in one visit, even if it makes the bill bigger.

When I get back from Tx. I'll have to make an appointment to take Rusty and Rocky. Rocky's teeth usually have to be done every year. Altho, I'm hoping maybe I've got that fixed that he won't have too. My old vet told me to add a handful of whole corn to his feed. That helps keep their teeth in better shape. It worked good last year. He needed floating but nearly so much. Rocky hates his mouth messed with, his teeth aren't all that good from the cribbing he use to do, and that causes him to chew wrong. For awhile I had to have his teeth done 2-3 times a year.

Well, equine vets usually are men:). I had reservations about this vet just because she was a girl. But if the horse is hard to handle then she'd just tranquilize. So far I've liked her. The vet I use to use died last summer:(. We have tons of horse vets in this area, but all the other ones I know of are pompous arrogant overchargers, IMO:) You can't walk away from one of them without dropping at the least $100, no matter what the problem.

This is the first time I will use this vet for yearly stuff. I'll have a chance to compare her prices to my old vets. I use to be able to take a horse to him, get shots, coggins, teeth, worm check, and beaned, for around $60. I could take a horse to him, with a problem, and unless he actually did some treatment he didn't charge anything. He'd tell you what to do and send you on your way. But he did have drawbacks, as there have been times I feel he was too conservative on treatment. He always tried the least expensive routes first, when there were times I'd have paid the extra to be sure I was on the right track from the start with problems. But I did appreciate the fact he was careful with everyones money. He was older, had his clinic paid for, his only employee was his wife, so he had very little overhead, and passed that on to his patients, not many would do that. Great man.

Oh good:)

Are you going to get to keep it long enough to make a trial run with the horses?

The sun is out now here. I'm going to go get the mess on the patio from last night cleaned up, then probably ride a bit. No arena work today, too muddy. But Harley and I can do some trails. I'm suppose to ride with Tina again tonight.

I got a few pictures of Belle, and Dot. I don't think you'll be able to see the difference in their color from pictures. They are so close, yet so far:). The more I stood out there and looked at them to more I saw the differences, not only in color but in confirmation. Dot actually has a much bigger hip then Belle, and she's wider, like her daddy. Belle is a big horse, but big in differnt way. But I'm pretty sure it will be hard to tell from pictures. I'll post later, Mack is computing now:)

Did I miss something? Did you get the truck to keep, or is this to have it ready? Whatever it is, it's one step closer. This is great! You will have so much fun, packing the tack room.

Just got in from riding Harley. I'm glad I got it done, looks like it may rain some more.

I can't remember who was asking about AIing a mare the other day. I forgot to mention that I asked my vet the other what it costs for the owner of stud to collect a specimen. She said there is a one time expense of buying a "boot" for the stud. Every stud should have their own, and they can be used over and over. The there is usually around $150-200 charge for the vet to do the collecting. Depends on how easy the stud does it:).

IMO, I didn't ask, but I would think the owner of a mare wouldn't pay the owner of a stud much more then just a stud fee. I never thought to ask how much a vet charges to AI a mare. I'll try to remember to ask today. Mack wants me to ask how long a specimen is good for??

I think they're good indefinately if they're frozen, but not very long if they're not. I know that when my husband and I were going through all this mess for infertility, they had you collect a specimen and you had to keep it at body temperature until you could get it to the lab. They would let you take the specimen cup home to collect so you didn't have to do it in the lab. It was kinda funny, here you were driving to the lab with a specimen cup tucked under your armpit like a mother hen with her chick. Sheesh, I'm glad all that's over with! ;o)

This vet told me 48-72 hours. I asked about freezing, and she said it's very expensive because it's hard to freeze...???

Maybe horse specimens are differnt from human.

It costs $25 for for the vet to do the procedure on the mare.

Hmmmm, I wouldn't have thought that since so many people ship frozen semen for cattle and even horses. I know you have to have liquid nitrogen, but still. Maybe it's the special equipment you have to have. Who knows. They may just charge so much because they can. Doctors seem to like to do that.

This is Dot on the left, Belle on the right. Hard to tell the difference in their color since Belle is wet. But you can sort of.

This is the white spot on Belle's withers that she got from that neoprene pad on a competitive ride. She had a big scalded spot and the hair grew back like this.

This is the only white spot on Dot and why she is called Dot:), her mom and dad have no white on them at all, other then where that spot on Belle's wither.

And this is Dot taking Grizzly skiing:)
