This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
We still have to arrange to have Dad bring the truck down to install the wiring harness and brake controller in it, and get the right length drop ball for it. Assumption is we'd be lucky if the ball he had for our boat was the exact right height and we'll probably need a new one.
He's expressed a willingness to do that as soon as the trailer is ready to pick up (the windows). I don't know how long that will take, might know after tonight.
My riding buddy, who is in so many of the pictures I post here, is in his 60s too. I would be be totally lost without him. His wife is very understanding also. I've met her a few times and she's a very nice lady. She just doesn't like horses. Neither does my Husband, so it works out well for all concerned.
My buddy and his wife have just left going on a 3wk driving vacation out west and I'm going to have to scrounge up somebody else to ride with and I just hate it. When I'm with him, I don't have to worry about how I look, I don't have to talk if I don't want to, I can just enjoy the ride. Now I'm going to have to polish up my social skills. Yuck! ;o)
Most horse trailers take a 2" ball and I think alot of boats take a 1 and 7/8", but maybe you'll be lucky. I saw a truck the other day that had a receiver in it that had 3 different sized balls mounted on it. I assume you just pulled the pin, pulled the hitch out, turned the right sized ball to the top, shoved it back in and replaced the pin. It looked funny, but I'm sure it was convenient.
Don't you think there is a difference though? All dogs have hunting instincts. Cindy will chase any rabbit or rat that comes in her yard. She won't bite heads off of them or attack me if I check her though. She would run at the first time someone yelled at her. It's hard for me to explain but it's like they just want to kill vs hunting. Very aggressive animals.

Oh - I don't trust the mind of a pit bull farther than I can throw the animal. They are different.
But chicken killing is not what makes them different... A temperament that was bred to fight to the death without quitting, is what makes them different.
I'm just speaking to most folks and the family labrador. If it's any kind of labrador, it's gonna kill chickens unless you invest a lot of energy changing it's mind. ;~D It's not illness, but instinct.
That's why I suggested giving him the opportunity to deny it was his dog. That way when she blows him away the owner can't come back that she shot his dog. If I shot him though there would be no dog.

Yeah, me too. When I go on rides, I see all these girls with all their makeup on, their hair done and nice fancy clothes and I just smile. They're either trying to look nice for the guys on the ride or trying to impress the other women. I couldn't give a Rat's @SS as long as I get to ride and I'm comfortable! ;o)
Dog??? What dog? I haven't seen any dogs around here. ;o)

LOL! It's hard to lie around a 2yr old. They'll squeal on you every time.

You should see some of the outfits that I go in when I ride. It's usually a pair of work boots, old jeans and an old t-shirt. I'm going to get dirty anyway, so I honestly don't see the sense in getting my "good" clothes all dirty. I think that the women who dress to impress on a regular basis, are barking up the wrong tree, because your horse certainly doesn't care! If you're on a ride, or at a show, it's a different story, but actually even on a trail ride, it shouldn't matter.
The only time I've actually dressed really nice for a ride is when I was riding in a parade. If I showed, I would then too, but that's it. It's all about comfort for me.
I've always wanted to ride in a parade. I've done drill team before. I think it was the hardest thing I've ever done.
Drill team seems like it'd be a blast. I'm sure it takes hours and hours of practice to get it right though. I've seen some awsome routines at big events like Equitana and have always enjoyed watching them.
Parades are fun if you've got a good calm horse and I've been blessed to have one in my old gelding, Tennessee. I haven't tried it with any of the others, except Truly when she was a 2yr old. She did fine then, but I don't think I'd try it with her now. Blade would probably be good at it. Nothing much scares him and even when it does, he's controlable. Bob would probably be awsome. Absolutely NOTHING scares him, or if it does, he doesn't let on. I think he's too stubborn to be scared. ;o) I think the secret lies in getting them started at it at a young age. Once they're grown, you just can't hardly get them out of being afraid of everything.
Speaking about dogs... Someone is shooting near here, been going on for awhile, periodic single shots, perhaps sighting in a rifle.
Gidget is barking like a mad dog. She'd go after it. Loud noises tick her off ;~D
Homer is whining and trying to crawl in my lap.
Poor Homer, give him a hug for me. :o)
