This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
well saying neighbour, they are not close to us, but are our nearest neighbour.
They know deaconjim wasnt here last night, so i guess they now know i will shoot if need be, hopefully the warning is enough.
Well James and Jacob have gone to get some materials to make the chicken yard safer, so I am going to grab a coke, relax and read. I hardly slept at all last night.
See U all later!
I'm with you about not reporting it to the law and not saying anything to them about it. That way, the dog can just "dissappear", just like the chickens did. If anything is ever said you can just say, "Hmmm, whatever got the dog must've been the same thing that got my chickens". Blame it on the black panther. ;o)
Well, it is in their blood... Whether bird dog, hound or shepherd, prey drive is bred into most of our pets, it was their reason for being. Some can be got over it, but only if they are started early or unusually untantalized by chickens. I'd say it would be the unusual dog who would ~not~ be a chicken killer if given the free opportunity.
My friends Bob and Kay had an early bit of marital tension when she moved in with ducks and geese and he had bird dogs. He wasn't about to punish his dogs for killing birds. And seeing how much prey drive Gidget has, I wouldn't try to get birds here. It's just a losing battle.
Firefighters say at least half a dozen horses were killed this morning in a barn fire in Lordstown. The barn on Park Road caught fire around 5 this morning. No word yet, on what started the blaze.
This barn belonged to a long time friend and his wife. They had hunters and jumpers. This is all they had on the news. So sad.
Another bit of sad news for me. My shooting/traveling buddy died of liver cancer yesterday morning.
Ohhhh. So sorry, for you on the loss of your friend, and for your friend and their horses.
My mom died from liver cancer.
I'm sorry on both counts.
Becky
Well, I've got some inside chores done now. I'm going out to ride Harley in the arena. I want to get Rusty rode today too. AFter watching him run hard yesterday, I think I'm taking him to the creek to do some hill climbing for a test. I'm beating down a rising hope that he may be fit to go to that clinic....:), I have to keep remembering the ulcer and what trailer rides and hard work does to an ulcer in a horse...but it will be tempting if this stifle thing has healed.
Becky
Well, I sure hope he's fit and you have a good ride.
I'm sorry to hear about your shooting buddy. Good friends like that are hard to come by. And the barn fire is so tragic. I would just be devastated if it happened to me. We'll keep them in our prayers.
(((MissTargets)))
Hair, my Mom died of liver cancer too. She was only 53. Never smoked and only had a drink on Holidays. You just never know.
Nothing more on the news about the barn fire. It started at 5 and firefighters are still on the scene.
Well, we have that in common, sorry to say. My mom was 58.
As for the barn fire... It's everyone's nightmare that has a barn.
Our trails look just like the rest of the countryside :) but I'll take some pictures and post them.
I'm so sorry about the chickens. The dog obviously kills for the pleasure so he's very dangerous. I hope you get him soon.
If the dog comes back, get rid of it. Bury it and forget about it. And don't tell a soul (other than deaconjim of course). If anyone asks, just say there was a problem at your house too, with animals being attacked/killed but whatever hasn't been back.
Oh I am so sorry, both for your friends loss and for your loss of a good friend.
Harley did great today, even his circles to the right were very very improved. I think it's more we are getting in sync with each other. I didn't ride him long, since he did so much yesterday. We even loped the pattern one time. I wasn't going to do that till I felt sure he had it down at the trot perfect. His trot was so much better, not perfect, but better, that I went ahead a loped it and it was very improved too, so I stopped after that.
I've always been stiffer, and more nervous in an arena then out on trails. Takes me longer in an arena to trust one then out...but I think we're getting there.
Becky
It's an interesting psychology you have... I'd be more confident in the arena than out on a new horse, for doing fast work at least... perhaps you are more confident on trails because you keep the pace slower?
Glad your ride went well at any rate!
I'm doing laundry today, and cleaning up. Not sure if I'm going to go through the emotional risk of trying to start the mower. I may just fire up the weed-wacker and do what I can with that along the fenceline.
This afternoon we go sign the paperwork on the trailer... as soon as ecurbh gets off work.
I know I've always felt I've got it backwards:). The really funny think is I've never come off a horse in the arena, but as you know I've come off several times on trails....
I have, and do often, open a horse up out on trail. But where I have the problem, is going from a stand still to flat out run. I can get one running without fear, if I build to it, not just those quick starts.
I had problems with going form 0-60 on a motorcylce quick, but I've gone 90 before just slowly accelerating with no problem.
I what I need for barrels is a long long alley way:)
Becky
When I get back from the vet this afternoon, I've got to do some mowing. We;re haveing dinner company tommorrow so I've need to mow.
So you think you will get to bring the trailer home this weekend?
Becky
