This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
My neighbor Beth raises Pit Bulls. She always keeps them chained (with log chains), or in a kennel. She asked me to feed for her one time when she was going to be gone a few days. I had to move the dogs (2) from thier chains to a crate for night. Beth swears PB's get a bad rap because of bad owners. That they are really nice dogs when raised properly. Her's do seem friendly, but....I was really nervous handling them. My husband went with me and had a gun with him just in case. I was an almost stranger to those dogs. He was a complete stranger.

The thing about Rots, and PB's that seems to me to be the biggest problem is they are unpredictable. They can be sweet and gentle, but it seems I've heard numerous tales of them for no reason turning on their owners. I don't no if the "for no reason" is justifyed, but you hear that all the time.
Becky
You didn't say if you reported this or not. I sure hope you do. I would hate to see the dog come back, when your children are outside. Even if you have a gun, what's to say you could get a clear shot if the dog was attacking. At least have it on record at the sheriff's department.
Morning,
Wow, your rhodies are blooming already. Nice pictures. It looks to me, like the bridle is too tight on the pony. That could be why she is "smiling". Hard to tell on photos sometimes.
Good Morning...thanks for sharing your pictures. I really enjoyed them.
I have a funny story about an experience I had with a Rot.
We use to own a trash hauling business. One of our customers raised Rot's. The lady always told me if the dogs were out not to get out of the truck till she had the dogs put up. They lived in the country, and the dogs were like guard dogs.
Anyway one day, I got there and the dogs were out. The lady came out to get them. The door she took them in was around the corner from where I picked up the trash. I saw them in my mirrors go around the corner, gave them a few seconds and got out. I was half way between my truck and the trash cans, when I heard the lady start hollering the dogs names:) and come back, come back. I looked up and saw these two dogs comeing at me. I turned and ran for the truck, I actually dove head first over the tailgate into the trash I had there. But the dogs kept coming:) I was scrambling thru bags, and up on the roof. The funny thing was I would scream out an "AAAHHHH", then realize how funny I sounded and start laughing, then would "AHHHH" again. It was so funny, and scary at the same time. Luckily the dogs couldn't climb over the tail gate. I just sat on the roof till the lady had them under control, we were both laughing, even tho it wasn't really a laughing matter, but it must have been a heck of a site, when I dove over the tailgate, and my "AAAHHHH", I'm laughing now:)
Becky
LOL.
It's pretty scary to think about that episode. It was obvious the lady who owned those dogs was shook up by what happened, so I feel pretty certain those dogs would have done me some damage. She was laughing but it seemed her laugh was more relief that nothing happened, AND relief that I was taking the incident so well:).
Becky
LOL!! Oh man, Becky! That is a funny story, although it was prolly terrifying at the time.
I've been around silly Rotties, so I know they aren't all bad. But like Beaker said, I wouldn't want to be on its bad side.
That one that bit me was crazy. The owner came to pick it up (I worked at the vet's office back then) and since the dog hated men and I was the only woman on staff that day, I volunteered to bring the dog up.
When I took Cain out of the kennel, he was playful and happy, even licked my hand. I bent down to fasten the harness under his chest and his tail just froze in mid-wag.
I felt his body go tense and ~knew~ I was about to be attacked. I slowly stood up and backed away, keeping my eyes to the side to avoid provoking a challenge.
No luck. He jumped at me and sunk his teeth into my left arm. I kicked, screamed and punched until he let go and then kicked him in the ribs as hard as I could. As he went sliding across the concrete floor, I ran out of the back and shut the door.
The Doc lassoed him with the choke stick and brought him up to the front, where Cain charged his own owner, teeth bared.
The owner was stunned and Doc told the owner to put the dog down. The owner refused, so he was told that the dog was never allowed back in our office again.
Last I heard, the dog was seized and euthanized. I have a feeling Doc M made a phone call, because he was seriously worried that the owner's children were in fatal danger from the animal. And the owner seemed to care more about keeping his dog (which cost him $500) than the safety of his own kids!
It makes you wonder what made him so afraid of the harness. I do small animal rescue at times and they can come in with so many phobias.
Oh, it wasn't the harness that triggered the dog.
The dog would simply go from good to bad for no reason. Even if he was just standing there happy as could be, he'd go stock-still and lash out unprovoked.
He had serious problems that were not related to any abuse, so far as I could tell. He was very young and the owners had another dog who was perfectly well-adjusted.
They just had the misfortune to get a brain damaged animal. :-(
Yeah, I happens. Scary. Sorry about your arm but I'm glad you were able to get away.
I'll sure give it another look when I put it on her again. One thing I know is I am not real pleased with that D-Ring snaffle. It doesn't hang straight in her mouth, the Ds are too big. It's like they use full size Ds no matter if it's on a little 4-inch pony bit.
An eggbutt would be better. Or really, a mechanical hackamore would be hard to beat on her.
Are you going to report the incident? Does the dog's owner know what happened?
It was terrifying at the time, but I learned a valuable lesson about never sitting down next to a strange dog.
If I had been sitting instead of bending, he would have had me by the face instead of the arm.
I'm just glad he was finally put down. I couldn't imagine what he could have done to those kids. *shudder*
Hi all, we didnt report to the sherrif, if these peoples dog doesnt ruturn one day and a report was made I just know we would lose an animal or two. Judging by the chains, they took the gunshot they heard last night (when their dog was missing( seriously, however I am going to be vigilent and will shoot to kill if it comes back.
Its all farm land around here and if you have a dog kill your livestock you kill it. The sherrif is not involved.
Your tale reminds me of when my first husband Dave took a novice land surveying with him. They were doing property disputes and this "cool" kid went into a field without looking to see what was in it first. There was a very angry bull that charged towards this skinny kid who leaped accross a 5ft high hedge, not realising that the land height differed hugely on the other side. it was 15ft lower, but not to worry he had a huge 10ft high pile of manure to cushion his fall! LOL Dave made him ride in the Back of the truck on the way home! : D
sorry, it was your tale that reminded me of the bull incident!
I do understand the fear of retribution if you p*ss off the neighbor. It's just not a good situation all the way around.
