This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
horses are right up the other end of the field, Lightning has moved from his field into an adjacent field that I quickly opened up for him to get him away from situation. I have been talking to deaconjim and has just pulled up (record time). So i am heading to get jeans on. will be back on here in a little while.......
we went out armed, but no sign of the dog. Which is a pity. we found one rooster, one young hen. That was it. We also found out how he had been getting in and closed that off. Feathers everywhere. : (
Well we are going in the hot tub, then onto bed. I am so mad and unhappy at the loss. I want to kill that dog bad. I am also scared that he will come back.
speak with you all in the morning, thanks for all the support, helped me to keep calm.
Sharn
I hope the rest of the night is quiet, and that he doesn't return.
Did you call the sherrif?
I don't want to pile up on you but be prepared. Most likely he will be back.
She really is a sweetheart, you have just been misunderstanding her :) I don't think I'd have the nerve to hook her up to a cart, by the way :)
Congratulations on your anniversary. Boy, I'm sorry to hear about Jacob. Poor child.
Really pretty country. I'm going to have to get out and take some pictures of our trails - what a difference :)
I think maybe this would be a dog that just disappears when you get a clear shot. Not one that I would complain to the neighbor about, just deep six him if you can - then bury him deep.
Good morning.
Rose did the dog come back?
Duchess, yeah, we need to see pictures of your trails:)
Becky
Good morning everyone,
That is just what we intend to do. The cows are all around the spot he go in last night.........must be the scent.
I am so cross, I fear for my kids cause pit bulls are vicious, i fear for my animals, I am mad cause he wasnt chained up.............ealier on one of the neighbours teenagers walked up my road past my drive, we own the only two houses on this road, it doesnt lead anywhere and you NEVER see him just walking past, its a very long way! Well I thought then, he may have been looking for his dog, cause it was loose the other day, well i guess last night proved he didnt find him. What really gets my goat, is I had the kids outside playing and he never said "my pit bull is loose, watch the kids" or nothing....
Grrr. I am glad that the colts are ok.
Thanks for all your concern..........
Do you know what is really sad, what really hurts me the most, is I have some very good friends who farm for a living and have real tight times. I often take a pie etc over there for them, and to say thankyou, my friend brought me some chickens just a couple of weeks ago that she had raised. She was excited, because jacob likes to collect the eggs and they would be green. She was so happy that I was so thrilled and now all are gone. : (
I think I'd set up some kind of bait to draw the dog back tonight and pop him. Mostly because I'd be worried about the kids. Pit bulls are nasty animals.
Becky
good idea, i wish deaconjim was here tongiht but Friday is his next night off. I dont hink we'll have problems tonight cause all 3 pit bulls are chained up today. Deaconjim saw them as he took Emma to school.
I will be nervous about letting the kids play outside by themselves from now on, and that really isnt fair. I know that I will have my gun nearby and will not hesitate to use it if he shows up again.
I'd just stress to the kids every time they go out, that if ANY dog shows up come in the house, do not touch it, do not run, and do not start yelling, just come in the house.
Becky
The thing about chicken killers is that I have never been able to train them to stop. You can even beat them with a dead chicken and it won't do any good. I love dogs and I hate saying this but you have to relocate the dogs or kill them to stop it.
You have two problems though. Most chicken killers will run off but an aggressive pit pull may fight. If you can identify this dog I would go to my neighbors and nicely ask him to come see what his dog did and put the dog up and make restitution. If he says it wasn't my dog...well then you won't be shooting your neighbors dog the next time he shows up on your property.
Most likely he will send the dog elsewhere either way for liability reasons though.
Good morning everyone!
Rose - I'm so frustrated for you. :-(
I hope that animal control catches that dog, so you can go back to living in peace. My neighbor had a nasty Rottweiler that would get loose all of the time. I hated that dog (and I don't hate any animals usually).
The animal control came and took him 2 years back, but now those same people got a rottie puppy. *rolls eyes*
Have you brought the chicken killing pit bull to the attention of your neighbor? I'm so sorry about your chickens, especially since they were hand raised and given to you by a friend. We have a pitbull in our neighborhood, and he is the most unfriendly thing I've ever come across. He'll go after anything, big or little.
Oh, I know it.
Rotties can either be big, dumb and lovable or big, dumb and vicious. Usually it's the owner that makes or breaks the dog.
Except for the one that attacked me years ago. That dog had mental problems from in-breeding and even the greatest owner in the world couldn't have changed that dog's aggressive behavior.
The dog was only 9 months old and so vicious, it turned on its owner.
There are some dogs that just love killing chickens though. It's like it is in their blood. They may be the gentlests of beasts but when they see "chicken".....I had one like that. He didn't specialize though. He liked rabbits, kittens, and hamsters too but chickens were his favorite. (notice the emphasize on had and were:')
I used to have a family friend who was a vet, and she said (now I don't know how much of this is true) that part of the Rottie breed problem from inbreeding is that their skulls don't grow big enough for their brains, and that's part of the reason they go vicious, or nuts. The rotties that I've known have been big, dumb and lovable, great family dogs and great around kids and other small dogs. However I wouldn't want to get on thier bad side, that's for sure.
