This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
You've only got one left!!!!!!! ?????
Didn't you have a whole bunch?
Becky
Can you call the owner and get him to get the dog back under control tonight?
Any help from law enforcement in your area?
I'd call the cops right now and have them come get a report.
That dog's owner needs to pay for your chickens!
Well, I'm off to bed. Early morning tomorrow. Mack has to be on a job early, so I've got to get up early to make him some breakfast, and pack his lunch. See you then:)
Rose hope your chickens are just scattered and will regroup tomorrow.
Becky
Good night Becky!
I'm wrapping it up here too. Just worried for Mrs. Sharn. :-/
the dog came back, I fired off a shot but I am too far away and I dont want to go out there cause the shot didnt scare him, he is back again. Which is not good. Deaconjim has tried to call the owner, no answer, but I thought I heard some calls after my shot. I also thought I heard a shotgun just beg=fore the commotion here, so another farmer nearby may have tried to get him. It is pitch black outside so not good.
The only gun I am really trained to shoot is my ruger sp101 .357 magnum cal. I love it, but the chicken house is so far away. Deaconjim says the animals are not worth me going out there with an animal that is "not afraid".
I am scared and angry............
they are scatterred allright : (
Goodnight Becky!
I have to agree with deaconjim, hon. This dog has bad news written all over him.
I really think you should have the police out there. Not just for the report of your chickens being attacked, but let them know this dog is not intimidated by gunfire.
They'll come out and trap him in case he's gone rabid.
Good night.
I'd not be good if I had to shoot at a dog. It's part of why I don't have chickens... I don't want to attract trouble around here with dogs or coyotes.
But around here, were suburban enough that I think law enforcement would take seriously a dog that killed any pets, and would impound it. Not sure about that though.
I had a little trouble with a neighbor dog that would chase horses when I first moved here. It was just a rambunctious pup really, not a direct threat, and the horses would chase him as much as he chased them. I only got concerned because I feared them getting over-excited and hitting a fence. And I feared the dog getting himself killed by a horse. He came close a couple times to getting stomped.
The owner left so early in the morning, I never got ahold of him about it. I just added 3 more hotwires at the dog's level on that side, and that kept him out after that. I ended up meeting the owner later, and he had no idea the dog got out. He'd always be back in the fence when he got home.
Hey I'm alright, I'm taking deaconjims advice and staying indoors and keeping an eye on things from the balcony. He is still there, even after my shot which I know must have got close, so to me that means he may have a problem.
Deaconjim will be getting home in about 40 mins. (11:45pm), so we'll probably don flashlights and guns and head out to see what is happening. I have no qualms about shooting a dog that is attacking my animals. If it were my dog I would shoot it too, in fact that has happened in the past.
~fret~
I'm heading to bed or I'll be of no use to anyone tomorrow.
Keep us posted, OK? And call the cops if that dog gets any braver. It's worrying me that he's not scared.
that part has me worried the most too......
Have a goodnight, I wont go outside alone I promise. Thanks for caring.
I;ll post what happens.
Sharn
If that dog has gone rabid, you don't want deaconjim out there with him either!
I love the idea of having the cops come out for reinforcements. And citations to the dog's owner!
(((Rose)))
Thanks, chica. Here's hoping the police take care of it for you and that the chickens have run off, but are OK.
*fingers crossed*
I am an excellent shot. Hit the target dead centre every time. Sherrif wants me on his team! : ) But..........if a dog is that unpredictable, then I dont want to get within shooting distance of it. I just tried to call deaconjim,he should be on his way home, but he may be on the phone to the sherrif. I hope so.
Rest easy........
Sharn
I would call animal shelter to come out too. Maybe they aren't all dead but hiding.
Keep us all posted! It's a very nervous situation you've got! I'd shoot him too, if he was attacking the animals.
Are the horses quiet?
Rose.......Where are you?
