This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I think that would be a good idea. Ordering one can take awhile.
I wouldn't think your dad would care for you to borrow it. He'd have your littler truck to use, might enjoy the better gas mileage:)
Becky
That's what we're thinkin!
Wants to lay down and sleep, doesn't understand why mom wants her up and moving :), Lacey could care less about us, ran right up at one point.
Just to give you an idea of BamBam's size and why we don't want to argue with her if we can help it :)
ABOUT THE camera....The computer that Mack has is going to work fine.He has loaded some pictures from the new camera with it to a host site, but he has as yet been unable to find out how to get a URL address with this computer. A right click is not giving the same info as the old one. I guess Mac's are compeletly different systems, and there is going to be a learning curve to get past. He still has his old one running to till he gets the new one sorted out. I'm just now wondering if he loads them with the new one, could we get the URL with the old one....I'll check.
I will try to remember to take the camera, but first I have to learn to use it:)
Becky
I thought she ~looked~ like a filly. Is she of your stallion or was she bred elsewhere?
I was wondering what you do if you have a very protective mare....I guess imprinting is out of the question???? How long do mares keep up the protectiveness???
Becky
OH - I forgot it was a Mac. Let me ask a Mac person and I'll get back to you.
Wait - 2J has a Mac. 2J... how do you get picture properties to post them on a mac?
Yes, she's our stallion's first baby here.
Oh really? You must be pleased!
We did have one mare that it took us three days to get a halter on and get to the baby, but those are pretty rare.
"There's a lot of nuts over there, and we don't want any of 'em here."
Understood.
There are a few good ponies, but ponies, especially small ones, are really hard to train because they're too small for a big rider to ride. They end up not knowing anything but being yanked around by kids who don't know anything.
Good ponies cost a lot of money, and they are worth their weight in gold.
Horses can be great with kids. Most are naturally good with kids. It's just important to keep in mind that a child is not near strong enough to really control them.
Have you done lots of lead-line rides with Okie and SL? How old are the kids?
Just trying to keep the peas ;~D
By lead lines you mean walking with a rider on? They are 4 and 5 and will be taking lessons this summer. Sarah a funny little girl. She's horse crazy. She tells me she wants a little horse ever since she saw Pony. Thanks a lot lol. My instructor says she is a "natural" whatever that means. I was thinking maybe for Christmas but I didn't know which would be easier and safer.
Oh and is that really too young? One of my horse books says 8 but they start at 4 around here.
Honestly... 4 and 5 is way too young, and I wouldn't do more than leadline until they are a lot older. You can do a lot of that, they really enjoy it. No point in lessons even, you can tell them enough about hanging on. They don't have the strength or attention span to learn to properly communicate with the horse.
8 or 9 if they are still interested, I'd start them on lessons. 10 and 12, maybe their own horse if they are really interested in keeping up with it.
That's my take.
Yes, very pleased with his first. Anxious to see the next one now :)
If you want to buy a pony, look to a POA or a Quarter Pony - maybe in your area, even a Welsh. They are larger, 13-14h, so an adult can ride them, they usually have a better temperment, and children can keep them longer without outgrowing them.
