The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

There is an old wife's tale, to put pennies in a mare's water bucket, to keep them from coming in heat.

Hmmm.... how many? A few, or the entire contents of my penny jar? ;~D

Well, this new one here has a dry sense of humor and stirring things up in a good way. Very few preachers keep my attention during the entire service but he does. He's the opposite of what you describe. I hope he doesn't get run off.')

I hope so too. I had a wonderful Minister in England, he is one of my very best friends and I guess a hard act to follow. He was so good with the children and made them such an important part of every service so that they understood the meaning of what he was saying.
This new one treats the kids as a bother, I guess I just do not care for him one iota!

Is that an American tale or British, do you know? I'll bet it's whatever the penny is made of (copper) that has an effect on the hormones. Really interesting, I'd like to try it and see if it works.

I have no idea. I just remember hearing about it, when you all were talking about preventing them from coming in heat. A lot of those old "horse traders" knew a thing or two. I wouldn't think it would hurt them.

That church is in Waxahachie. A girlfriend of mine goes there.

I'm quite sure it wouldn't hurt them at all. I'll have to do some research and see what I can find, but I'll be an excess of copper (or some other mineral/metal) will prevent ovulation. Maybe I can find something by researching infertility.

Thanks for passing this along, cool information to know - especially if it's not toxic, not lasting. Perfect for show season then, don't you think?

Interesting thing about old remedies. Are they myths or things that work? As far back as the Old Testament they were putting objects in animals water troughs . The glass ball sounds like the body tricked into thinking it's pregnant though.
