This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Good morning.
Our vet coming today for shots and checkups for everyone.
Centaur, beautiful horses... Did the baths go well or did they think you were trying to kill them with the hose?
Fabulous story, and please follow up with us if there is more action taken on the woman.
Great con!!!
Thanks. The con WAS fun :)
I have come to think turnout in big spaces is vital to horses. When we bought our Cyn almost a year ago, she came from a home where she had a really nice, but small paddock to herself, and they had no pasture at all there, just a home and three horse paddocks on maybe an acre. She had grown up there.
When we bought her we thought she moved like a clutz, but she has a super bomb-proof personality and we thought she'd be good for my husband, who was a beginner. "she's not a pretty mover like Bay is" we said about her as we watched her thud around the pasture.
She's still isn't graceful by any means, she has these enormous feet and a chaotic kind of tangled gallop, but she's gotten so much better! I think growing up in small paddocks and then riding trail or an arena, she never learned how to move. Now she has a pasture where she can run 'full out' with the others, and I think she'd learning how.
Well, ours are stalled at night especially in winter, but even now because I think it's the only time my old Bay will lay down at night. So from observing him, I think he sleeps better and is more alert in the daytime when he's been in. We're in Western WA, and I don't think long periods out in wet are good for them. They come in just to dry off at night.
BUT, they go out to pasture every day, rain or shine. This is more important because we don't ride as often as we should, and they move and run quite a bit playing with each other.
I think horses being turned out is a must. I wish I could turn mine out more then I do. But if I turned them out 24/7 they would get NO grass. They are not ever "stalled" but kept in smaller runs when not out on what pasture I have. Usually about 1/2 the day they get to get out of their runs.
It will be easier when Belle goes back to her pasture.
Becky
Yeah - I spend half the year trying to rest the pasture so it doesn't get eaten down to dust. And of course, now, I worry that there's too much out there. Feast or famine, I tell ya.
Well, the horses are still in and banging. I'm gonna move them out to the ties and groom them so they are ready when the vet comes. I like them to be brushed and looking good for inspection. ;~D He's supposed to be here at 8:30
Yes, I am. I trail ride alot where there are other horses and figured better safe than sorry.
Well, I'm feeling alot better now, so I think I'll go ride Harley for just a little bit. It's still very humid, and I've got all that s#!t in my head and chest from the cold breaking loose and it seems like when I go out side and do lots of moving around I get to coughing, but I'm going to try. Mack is out working and I'm home alone. I've got a few errands to run later when it gets really hot. See you all later.
Try to control yourself today, with the vet there:)
Becky
They are beautiful - and big :)
Happy Birthday!!!

He's gone... he arrived while I was still brushing. Gave everyone shots, Cyn was really good for her shots, and the vet really liked her. This is the first time he's really vetted her. And ~she's~ the one I think has bad ground manners. She was a dream. Didn't flick an ear for her shots. He's not worried about her stifle at all. He saw what she does, but it isn't much.
Bay circled around for a couple minutes like a hot snot with the needle in his butt... He was hot today... Plus he had his tear ducts flushed out. Have you guys ever seen that done? There's a tiny hole in their nostril that is the outlet for the tear duct, the tube runs right under the skin from the eye to the nose. If it gets clogged, they get some goopy or runny eyes. He stuck a small syringe into the hole in the nostril, and flushed water till it came out his eye. Bay thought it was about the weirdest thing anyone's ever done to him sober.
When we gave shots to the pony, she did this:
A capriole to rival any lipizanner ;~D
Afterwards, we lunged Bay so that the vet could see how he's moving. Still full of adrenaline I think from the vetting, he floated around on the lunge and danced and snorted and acted like a two year old stud horse. The vet said "I think he's just fine. I wouldn't be surprised if he's just fine in ten more years, he looks great." I can't take all the credit for good genes, but I'm pretty proud of his health at 24.
Any mare and foal news?
Would you like to be put on the good morning ping list?
Becky
Well your herd sounds to be in good shape, especially pony if she can do that:)
I just came in from riding Harley. We did better today then the last time. He just moves so differnt from Rusty, and he so much more senstive to cues I'm having to concuisouly remember not to over cue. But we're getting there. The long shank snaffle seems to be working better then the others I've tried too.
Becky
I would love that! Do you mind?
