The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Is the strangles vaccine called flu-rhino?

No - from what I understand, it's a separate vaccine that is not in any of the 5 or 8 way flu and rhino vaccines.

Love the photo of your horse, it is so good!
Our vet is due this June, and I was going to ask him the same question you have just asked. Someone has told me that having them vaccinated doesnt mean they wont get it as there are different strains. Not sure on that one, so I'll leave it to the vet when he does everything else, to let me know.
Our farrier/trainer has retired from the business, so we are looking for another farrier. Sigh.
The kids are going back to school tommorow, they got deaconjim some t-shirts for his birthday, which he has already has been given.
I'm in a "don't feel like doing anything" mood today. : )

We are going to vaccinate the horses that are used in endurance. On rides all horses are sharing the same water trough, hay piles, etc. so it is a concern. Will not vaccinate the others unless something changes.

Horse people spend their whole lives looking for a good farrier ;~D

SO many farriers are just guys that really didn't work well in jobs that had to deal with people, so they went into horse shoeing.;~D

I'm lucky, I like mine, and he's as stable as they come.

We have three :) - spread the horses amongst them. We decided to do that due to prices, quality of shoeing and the fact that we can generally get one out almost immediately if necessary.

I am sad we have lost ours, he had done all the professional training and everything and was also a trainer. He has a wonderful way with horses that just make them want to please him. It is wonderful to watch.
I am scared we wont find someone as good.......

Well "fear factor" is just about to come on, it is the only tv i really like to watch, the kids and I sit and groan and scream and cheer and generally have a blast when it is on.
Sometimes I have to leave if it is really disgusting and the kids just laugh at me, cause I am heaving! LOL
Isn't it nice to be loved so much! : )

Hey Sharn, I'm going "land looking" this weekend. A Realtor faxed me 5 potentials today, all in my own back yard! One has been on the market for 61/2 years though ????????/

Has anyone heard from Becky today?

You know what, I don't even know if my horses were vaccinated for strangles, I'd have to call my vet and ask.

I will be glad when the weekend here. The state has been inspecting us all this week. Looks like we will be offical Friday:') Nerve wracking. My boss told me they really liked my work and said lots of good things. That was a lift but I'm tired and looking for Fri. I have some overtime so maybe they will kick me out early:') Oh well. I'm off to church.

Ours get EEE,WEE and whatever E there is. Plus, rabies and West Nile. There were quite a few horses with West Nile the past few years. Lots of dead birds found in yards too. A caution is even on the radio about vaccinating horses for it. Not too sure about the strangles. I have not heard of very many cases here. A friend took a couple of colts to a local sale, they didn't sell. He brought them home and they both ended up with shipping fever. Not sure if that's the same thing.

I'm a stay at home Mom now, but I remember when I was pulling 60 hour weeks, there was nothing sweeter than getting to go home early on a Friday! Good luck! : )
