*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think weaning them together is great. Sometimes it's nice if you can remove foals and moms from earshot of each other, but that's not always practical, and many times, weaning goes surprisingly easy, if they are growing up and growing independent naturally ;~D

I wasn't sure how it worked in the wild.

In the wild, colts get run out of the herd at puberty, and the fillies get bred.

Those young colts will sometimes hang together for a time, but only until they find a mare to fight over.

Thanks for your help. as you know this is a newbie for me and I want to do it in a way that causes as less stress to mare and foals as possible.
We do not have a field that is totally out of earshot, but the two we can use are not on the same fence line which I think would be the way to go.
The colts are already pretty independent in their behaviour, they do not stay at their moms sides at all, but run together and sleep together away from their moms. When we have them in the round pen, they do not seem anxious to get back.
Like I have said, they are already drinking water and having feed and hay by themselves to make sure they get it and that they become used to that being available at certain times of the day. : )

NOOOOOOOOO!! Don't do that! Blade, who was only 2yrs old at the time, almost ate Bob alive, and Bob was a yearling.

Well, I was late on the reply and didn't check to see that you already had answers, but it was one of those bad "instant flashback" memories. I learned it the hard way that day.

I got a trailride picture for ya. This was taken at the top of the prettiest cleared hill. You could see for at least 20 miles in every direction. You can see where we started from, at the farthest point in the clearing on the horizon, just above Blade's head. It was a gas line right-of-way. I would love to come here and pitch a tent and camp. I can just imagine laying on my back on the ground and looking up at the stars from up there. It would just be awsome!

Did you and ecurbh ever get to camp out at your place. I know you set up camp, but then it started raining. Did you ever actually sleep out there?

Heh... no, we wimped out. ;~D

We need to get a decent camping bed set up. And it seemed a lot of work to sleep outside when we could practically see the house ;~D

We learned what we needed to, that the horses (Cyn in particular) would stand and eat on highline without being high maintenance... ecurbh got to become familiar with what the set up would look like when we do go horse camping.

Well I am going to disappear for a bit, its the horses afternoon feeding time and I also need to move the rabbit cage etc.
The children are much better and will be going to school tommorow if they stay the same. They are going back outside as we now have some cloud cover so it has cooled back to the low 80s thank goodness!
Ice-creams all round!
That reminds me, Walmart now stocks a frozen slush pouch (blue raspberry) made by BlueBunny called "CHILL" in a pack of 6 where you just take the cap off and enjoy! The kids love them and they are not too expensive. : D

Wish I could send your little ones some to make them feel better! : )

When are you going to get your trailer? Has your Dad said anything else about letting you have the truck?

We might actually go down and buy it this weekend. It may take days, up to a week or so, for them to have the trailer ready anyway with additional mods we want, and we certainly don't want to wait ~after~ we have the truck.

So we may be making payments on a trailer we can't pick up yet... until dad buys the new truck.

Dad ran into complications on the truck, he didn't love the new Chevy. He's always had Chevys and he'd love to have a brand new version of the exact same truck he already has, I'd imagine, and it's too different. So he's exploring Fords, and Dodges, and it's now very complicated. I can't complain about a gift being late, so I can only hope he finds one he really likes soon.

This is a pretty new procedure, just the past couple of years I think. One of our vets specializes in breeding.

They will be fine together and you will probably see their moms heave a sigh of relief when you take them away. :)
