*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Surely you would have noticed if she dropped the foal.. and she can't reabsorb it at that stage... can she?

I have always wanted to do volunteer mounted search and rescue... I've always thought it would be very rewarding. I called to try to join our sherrif's dept mounted rescue group a couple years ago, but they really didn't want me until I had my own trailer and would not be dependent on others. When we get out trailer I'd like to try again.

Bob belonged for awhile. As an ex-deputy, it seemed a good fit. He didn't like that the calls always seemed to be late or in crap weather. Unfortunately, I think that is when people need the help.

On the local news there's a search going on for two women who got lost hiking. They made a phone call yesterday to say they were lost but then lost battery on the phone. It's pouring out, it's nasty, but there are horse trailers pulling in and riders getting ready to go out. I'd like to be there.

I figured out what Rocky is doing. He's cribbing on the trough:(. I've been taking his cribbing collar off him when he's locked up in his run. It was rubbing a bare spot on his polls. Everythink, or so I thought:), in his run is fixed that he can't crib. I guess he just discovered the trough. He was cribbing on it so hard, that everytime he did it, it pulled it towards him a little bit. I put his collar on him for now, but I will probably switch out his tough with a smaller lower one that he can't do that on.

Once I've got my suspicions confirmed that Belle isn't pregnant she will go back to the pasture, and I will put this trough between Rusty and Harley.

While typing the above, the vet called. Belle is going in at 3:30 today. She said we need to check if she has some kind of infection????? I didn't ask anything, will wait till I'm there.

I've really come to the conclusion that my mare is not pregnant anymore...

Well I hate to hear that! You mare sounds like she did the same thing Bluebell did. It sure is disappointing. I was all set to take her back to the stallion yesterday but the guy called and asked me to wait until Wednesday because he had one mare that had her foal early and didn't have any milk and some other mares there and didn't really have any place to put her right now. Oh well. At least he caught me before I left the house.

On a better note, I rode her on Saturday afternoon and she did really well for a horse that hadn't been ridden in 6 years. She doesn't know a bit from Adam's house-cat, but she responds to leg pressure really well and she's got a VERY fast walk and a really nice smooth rack. I just rode her for about an hour around the farm, but I took her over logs and around farm machinery and she took it all in stride. She didn't much like the bulldozer, but with a little encouragement, went on past it. I may try her out on a short ride out at the horse camp this weekend with just a friend or two.

I took off work this past Friday and went riding at a local horse campground, but didn't want to take her on that long a ride so I took Blade. On Saturday, we went on a nice organized ride at a different place to benefit the American Cancer Society but I didn't want to get her out in that large a crowd just yet. Nothing like getting dumped in front of 100 people. Some others did though. It's amazing how many people will take a green horse out on that kind of ride. Gives the rest of us some entertainment though. ;o)

She said we need to check if she has some kind of infection?????...

I went through that with my mares when trying to get them bred year-before-last. We had to infuse their uterus with Gentamycin 3 days in a row. That ususally does the trick.

Do you know, if she had an infection, would she get pregnant and stay pregnant for that long and then loose it?

Hoping that I catch you before you go - just finished reading and getting caught up. I really hope Belle is still pregnant, however, if she's not - ask the vet about a chemical flush and putting her on regumate when she's confirmed back in foal.

We did that with Farah finally - she carried full term, that's Tuffy's mom, and then for the very first time in her life, bred back witha foal at her side. She was confirmed in foal yesterday, and is back on regumate again.

She's the one I thought maybe was diabetic because she drank so much water. Whether it is that or hormones, the regumate seems to have solved the problem.

Farah lost her foal the year before we put her on regumate. It was sometime during the last part of her pregnancy we think and we never did find evidence of it. She looks and acted pregnant right up until about 9+ months, then did not.

She must really be a nice mare to be so good after six years.

I'm thinking that may be something she is going to have to have, I've heard of it. What is the cost on that?

The regumate costs $238 I think - I get it from Valley Vet with a prescription. I can't remember the cost of the flush but believe it was under $200.

No, usually they don't get pregnant at all. At least that's how it was with my mares.

The flush was what I was talking about earlier, except my vet called it "infusion". Having it done one time didn't seem to do the trick with mine. It took 3 days in a row and I think it was about $30 a pop. They have to be in heat when you do it so the cervix will be open, otherwise you can damage the cervix and they'll never carry another foal again.

I have a question, when it comes time to completly wean the colts, would it be sensible to put them in with Lightning, our stalion?

No. I can't imagine that would be good. There are circumstances where young bachelors are all turned out together, but they are all the same age. Your adult stallion is not compatible with foals. He should remain alone now until he's gelded. Stallions are not good companions to other horses, even 'good' ones. If he were in the wild, his instinct would be to drive the competition from herd.

No - this is different than an infusion. They use chemicals that clean off the uterine walls. It stays in overnight and then is rinsed out the next day. It requires the mare stay overnight with the vet.

OK i thought that would be a big NO, Sense told me that thee foals could get hurt, but I wasn't sure how it worked in the wild. Anyway, we have worked out what we are going to do, when the time comes the foals can stay in the field they are used too. The mares can go in a new one.
Thunder and Adge only seem to be with the mares when they want milk, which does not seem that often. They drink water and eat hay and grain already and mostly stay by themselves away from MOMS! : ) We will cut back on Mistys and Sugars intake a week before total seperation so that their milk will slow down some.
We are already making sure the foals get what they need in the way of grain and hay by seperating them at feeding times.

To lessen the stress to the foals, we are going to wean them together that way they will still be in the same field playing etc.
