The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We are at a computer store, Mack is talking to a salesman, and I found a computer and actually figured out how to get here:)

I think he may buy a mini Mac. He has now heard enough negative stuff about the "new" computer we got that he may not want to mess with it. But we really do need to upgrade.

Talk to you all later.

Becky

I used the paste on the hooves . It kept the outside shiny but they still cracked. My trainer likes it though. It just didn't work on mine. It gets so dry around here that in the summer, no wait, already I have to wet to clean. It's even worse when they get into mud. After it dries, it's like concrete. Iworry about fungus when it's wet and they are walking in wet a lot too. Do you have problems keeping yours clean, this way?
Tuffy, my trainer said 101 normal. I'm looking in my book and it says 99-100.5 so I guess that's close to high normal. I took SLs today and it was 99.2 and I was ready to throw her blanket on:') I guess that is good, huh?
Help me with the pulse though. I felt all of her feet and all felt "normal" I can't find the pulse though. I felt on all sides down to the pastern. I thought I had it once but it was mine. Can you draw it?

I think what she was saying was when they are normal you may barely feel the pulse or perhaps not at all, and when they are foundering, it will definately pound and you can feel it.

I think the place to check is on the back of the fetlock

Well definitely nothing was bounding. I've had her in a stall next to the chickens for several days so I took her out and walked her a little. She's doing good. Her eyes are still runny but besides being a little jumpy and still having an occasional productive cough she's so much better.

That's good. Is everyone in the barn recovering or are you still getting new cases?

Runny is an unfortunate typo when discussing illness. ;~D

true lol. Well the good thing is that she has been desensatized to tight spaces, ropes and roosters:') Seriously, I have noticed that both are a little jumpy after they started getting better. When they were sick , do what ever you want and then suddenly routine things back um up. I guess their nerves just raw.

Well, there's 'too sick to fight' and then as they improve they have to pass through 'still feel like crap and irritable'. ;~D

Yeah but it's more like startlability (spell check says that's a word:') than irritability.

They have both been very good patients and seemed happy to let us do anything to make them feel better. Dull but trusting eye watches.

Somebody once showed me how to find that pulse at the fetlock but I have always had trouble locating it.

Yes, sometimes it is a worry about thrush when their feet is always wet, but if you want to put in some extra work, paint the bottom of their hooves with Hooflex or neat's-foot oil to keep it from getting thrushy, and then let the water tank overflow. Really. Everybody around here does it to keep hooves flexible.

And BTW I don't have any dry-hoof troubles today, a terrific storm just went through, massive rain and hail. But it was very welcome.

The best way to explain it would be to use "ankle". At the back of her leg, above her ankle, put your thumb and forefinger lightly just above where the ankle starts to widen. Your fingers will be on either side, about an inch and a half to two inches apart. Lightly, run them down until you feel a gentle pulsing. Don't feel it, try again. If the horse is fixing to founder it won't be difficult to feel. On some horses you can even see it. If I can get outside for longer than a few minutes, I'll take my digital camera with me and and take pictures of how it's done. 2 of my kids are sick today, one has a temp that's flirting with 105 and one is 100.

I was driving back from the Victoria area yesterday. I fought a south wind all the way back. It looked like it was going to get bad a few times but it didn't. Same today. It's very windy and dark clouds but it's held off so far.
You know I'm looking for property don't you? I haven't found anything I like or can afford around here. If you run across any "good deals " in your area, holler, ok?
