This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Thanks!
It looks like lots has been going on. I think it's so cool that Mommadooo3's daughter is out keeping Hair's horses. I hope she has a good time. I'm lucky I guess, I've got in-law's that'll do it for free! The only problem is that they don't know anything about horses. They just dump the feed and go about their business, but it's better than nothing.
I hope Hair has a good time on her trip. They were going to Arizona for a wedding or something weren't they?
Oh good, I'm glad that you know what I'm talking about
:-) Do you still have snow down where you are? Most of it is gone here except for the chucks of it. it's realy wierd (and somewhat challanging) to ride a horse in deep snow. They do a lot of floudering and sinking, and you try your best to stay out of their way! I'm fortunate though, in that the horse that I usually take out on the trails is very safe, and bombproof. I'll spook before he will. He's also really cute because he's always looking out for the little dogs that come with us so he won't step on them. He spooked once or twice, but it wasn't a "take off and run" spook, it was a "Oh dear, what's that moving in the woods? Oh, it's the dogs. Ok." type of thing.
"Ahem" disregard that snow question. I read: "I was down in northern New Jersy" as "I live in northern New Jersey, and I got out of Alabama before the six inches of snow..." :-p I need coffee.
The following guidelines are based on the latest information released by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (January 2001)
A. Tetanus toxoid: Once yearly. Booster after injury or surgery if toxoid not given in 6 months.
B. Influenza intramuscular: (Flu) Every 2-3 months if high exposure to other horses, foals should not be vaccinated until at least 6 or 7 months old. Note: for current foal Recommendations see below)
Influenza intranasal: twice yearly. More frequent booster not required.
C. Rhinopneumonitis: (Rhino) every 3 months if high exposure to other horses.
D. Encephalitis: Once or twice yearly,
E. Potomac Horse Fever: Once to twice yearly in areas with disease present.
F. Rabies: Once yearly.
G. Strangles: Once to twice yearly.
That's great they got those trails cleaned up, and you had a good ride. I remember riding pass a repelling area when I first got my gelding. Trail was so narrow and a long way down. Really scary on a new horse.
Cindy, I hope Okie is better and you don't get fired. Hey, it was an emergency!
We are going to a horse sale today. Estrogen is going to be there too, and I will try and meet up with her. I am taking off for the weekend after that, so you all have a very Happy Easter.
Thanks for the link, it was very informative and helpful. I'm going to print it out and keep it for a reference. Speaking of vaccinations, I've got to go and vaccinate Truly today since she's within a month of foaling. I've got a 6-in-1 shot that I like. I'm going to wait a couple or 3 weeks on Bluebell coz she's not due 'til early May.
Have fun at the horse sale and tell estrogen we said "HI"!
Good morning everyone! Hope everyone is well, we've been busy...
Weather turning stormy in WA... I'll be in touch in a few minutes. :~D
I haven't read all the posts, sure hate to hear that Okie is sick... and hope he recovers well and soon.
I'm going out to give the whole crew a wormer and their West Nile boosters. It's getting mosquito time around here. I even found a TICK on me yesterday after my ride! I HATE ticks! I'll check in later. Seeya!
He's better. Still puny and sluggish with eating though. I left my thermometer at home but he didn't feel hot. He looks like he's losing some weight. Still having green drainage.
Kelsi's here.
Yeah. When he's better I'm going to immz mine again and worm them. My vet out until Monday but his assistant said Sarah Lee already vac but that she could still catch it but would be a lighter case. If this lighter for Okie I would hate to see a full blown. I can see he's better but he's still sick.
Just got back from feeding horses.
Kelsi and Dad are 4 wheelin'.
I wanted to go riding but it's raining
Think I'll head over to the field to get some pix.
Stacee said that Twister has buddied up with the baby. They are all back by the barn now! AND some good news! Twister's hooves are breaking back close to where they SHOULD be.
All those horse ranches in your area are gorgous. When I could see the sky line I started getting home sick. Remember that big clock when we were kids? Man, you have some major construction going on though don't you? It was an exhausting trip. I hit rain and heavy traffic around Austin. It continued to Oklahoma. I was so disjusted though. I have always felt Texas cheap with the welcome houses. Now there is a really nice one built and a business with ADULT BOOKSTORE in big red lights by the river. I believe in free enterprise but...
It looks like it's going to rain here. I have been banned from the barn and do not like the idea of a sick horse out in the rain. I don't know why it should bother me when I kept him wet yesterday but.......
Poor guy! :-(
