*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I think you'd only need 5-6 posts, a pentagram or hexagon would be nearly round enough, and the span between them could probably be 15 feet... maybe.. if the netting was pulled nice and tight. Still thinking through how to do the gate opening, but I think the same netting could be used, and hooked and unhooked somehow.

Why on earth does she mount a horse that is tied?

Just guessing, but I have a feeling it's to keep him from walking off while mounting.

Well there are a lot of other ways to stop it that doesn't involve getting yourself or the horse killed.

Holy cow, Becky, what a scary story. She's very lucky, Juma had a horrible wreck on a t-post while at the trainers. He was tied to a t-post in an arena while the cowboys were running steers in a lane next to where he was tied. Juma freaked, reared up and impaled himself on the t-post. He healed up after a few months with no ill effects but it was a terrible accident.

Your friend is lucky the horse didn't rear up and fall over backwards on her. Why on earth is she mounting with the horse tied? Who unties her after she's on?

Good morning.

I think she ties her horse because he is very figity when she tries to get on. The horse is very tall, she is pretty short. Once she is on she leans over his neck, reaches down to unclip him.

After the wreck she got on him without him being tied, so maybe now she will do that all the time.

Tina rode alot as a kid. She rides pretty good. The problem is she rode a very well broke horse. She bought Oreo as a weanling thinking because she did well as a kid she was qualified to train one. IMO, there is a big difference to riding well on a broke one and knowing how to train one. She doesn't realize that tho, and I've seen her do several things that are not good to be doing. It's hard to tell her too, since she truly believes she knows what she is doing, I've tried and her response is well it's working so it must be OK, and then continues on doing things her own way. Her mounting while he was tied "was" working for her.

Sounds like she is makeing good progress to me. Consistency, IMO, is more important then fast progession.

Round pens would make teaching to lunge easier I guess, I've never had a round pen, but:)...I'm going to climb on my hobby horse, don't resort to free lunging. Even in a round pen you need to control them, and "voice" control really, IMO, is not control.

I don't think they'd be worth building for lunging... They might help make things go easier the first day, but after that, would be not needed.

I want a round pen like what I described in case anyone ever climbs on my pony, or any other unbroke horse. I want a round pen then, just to limit the head of steam they can get up. ;~D

Good morning everyone, We are exhausted as Tommy (3) is unwell with a sore throat and bad cough. He doesnt have a high temperature though which is a good thing. We are still heading out to get feed this morning, he loves to go to the store and try on all the cobwoy hats! LOL

Hope you all have a great day, and if you are riding today Becky with the same lady, please make sure you stay safe. : )

I watched my son break his horse. This horse had not had anything done with him at age two when Charlie got him.

Charlie took him to the ranch he hangs out at and Joe, his friend took him thru the steps of breaking. When it came time to get on the first time Joe had him do it in a 12X12 square stall. The sides of the stall were solid plywood high enough that the horse couldn't try to get over. We sent a horse to a trainer years ago and he started them the same way.

The thinking is, in a small square pen they can't get going so fast, and you can get them stopped easier by getting their heads in a corner. HOrses can get going pretty good in even a small round pen.

The initial times on a horse is to just get them use to having someone one them, starting, not necessarily going, and most importantly stopping.

Anyway, just another way of doing somethng. It made me nervous seeing Charlie on a horse in such tight quarters. BUt after seeing it done, I think the horse even thinks it;s to tight to do anything much:). Of course getting on should not be done till a tremendous amount of ground work has been mastered.

I agree about small spaces. The trainer we took the pony to started her out in a pen not too much bigger than 12'. Course, she's little. She can prolly canter in a stall ;~D

I work them on the ground in the round pen but I just can't ride them there anymore. I've never had an accident in there but they can get darn fast and if I go off I would rather in be in an open arena than against wood slats.

Thanks for the concern:). I'm felt rather bad yesterday, because during the bruhaha, Kristy and I just kind of sat there on our horses. It wasn't till the horse went down, we got off to try to help. But what do you do in those circumstances??? I actually thought if we went running over there it would just spook him more, and then when we did get off and our horses, who at the start of the wreck jumped round a bit, went to wondering off, I was afraid that would upset him too...it's like watching someone ride a bike, when wreck is happening there just really isn't much bystanders can do.

Of course getting on should not be done till a tremendous amount of ground work has been mastered.

I've done so much ground work with this pony in the past, she lunges well, drives well, I've even tied boots to her that would flop on her sides because she was so sensitive that anything touching her like that would make her jittery. The thing is, she probably trusts me as much as she ever will, and would probably do the best for me if I were to get on her. I know her. I know the look in her eye when she is about ready to blow up, and I know that if you just stop and lay a calm hand on her neck she relaxes.

But I think I'm to heavy for her, and I am more than a little risk averse. I've seen her buck and throw good riders. There's nothing to hang on to on a small pony. Your feet feel like they'll meet underneath her.

Oh well, it'd be a good reason to diet.... I just think I could ride her all day, and that wouldn't make her broke for anyone else. For her, it's all about trust, and trust is personal. She doesn't trust new people.

It depends on the kind of wreck they are likely to have. I'm with you. I don't really want to get thrown against the side of the round pen. But if you are just breaking in, you want them feeling like they don't have anywhere to run to. Out in the open, not only can they go faster, but they are tempted to.

I realize you know about the ground work:)

Your pony would be an ineresting challenge. Personally I think you could ride her for short periods and it wouldn't hurt. But then, like you say it wouldn't make her safe for just anyone especially kids. That's too bad too, she's so cute.

You know I have seen so many large large horses that are really more kid broke then kid broke ponies. Poor ponies. They are in a bad postion. Adults don't like getting on them for fear of hurting them, but very few kids can ride one properly for training. We got very very lucky with the pony we got for Jenny. He'd been rode by a girl that was truly and naturally a very good rider/trainer even as a kid. She had the advantage of having a mother who rode alot, and worked with her, didn't just turn her loose on the pony to do whatever. I think he was one of the hardest ones we ever had to part with. Too bad kids have to out grow them so fast. But it seemed a waste for us to hang on to the little guy when there were so many kids out there who could beneift from a pony like him. We kept up with him, and he went thru several more families of kids before we lost track.
