This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Is the fact that it is more common on Throughbreds have to do with racing? do you know. I was just wondering because alot of barrel horses are sewed up. I wondered if the more then normal amount of running they do has to do with why they develop the problem that causes them to have to be sewed.

Ok, I give up, what does "fragging" mean?
Yes, prevents sucking wind. Also, like you said, preventing infection from feces.
That is why we had the filly stitched. That bladder sticking out like that, was prime for infection.
Update on Harley's progress with the trailer. He is now standing at the trailer eating quietly. The first few days, he would take a bite, turn and run halfway down the arena, then sneak back up to it. He still seems a bit tense when a loud noise, like me banging the buckets:), which I do frequently, but he's not flinching so bad.
My son is here today, so today is the day I believe we will try tying him to it. Maybe at his afternoon feeding. I am going wrap his front legs with some polo wraps. I don't know how much protection that will give him, but it can't hurt. He's never gone down in the past when he threw his fits, but that was always a worry for me.

They don't say "Fragging" in that game? The action fighting games that I've played they call kills "frags", short for 'fragmenting' because you blow the guys to pieces.
I think, like anything else, ensuring a positive experience will lower the tension next time... If it were me, I'd tie him for meals and untie him when he's done, before he can get into trouble. If you did that, it'd be three tries a day, and if nothing goes wrong, I'd think after a few days he'd be well on his way to relaxing about it.
That's pretty much what I have in mind to do. I should have been doing this all winter...:)
Becky
To all;
Thanks for the info on the sewing business. I had never heard of it before. Now I don't know what to do. She was such an evil witch getting her to accept the stallion (they put a twitch on her lip, one on her ear and blindfolded her!) that I don't think the studhorse man wants her back.
Dang.
Anyway, how is it going with the trailer business?
Polo wraps will help. When my Thoroughbred mare was getting used to the trailer again after her awful trailer accident, I put loading wraps on her and they were too big and she just kind of stepped out of them!
"Why would someone do that?"
It's done across the board on racehorse mares. Evidently, when they run, they suck wind in there and it can cause problems. It's called a "Caslick's" procedure. Unless you're in the racehorse industry, it's not commonly known that this is done, unless you buy a former racehorse mare. I did, Juma's momma was on the track and she had a Caslick's, which I had to have opened before her due date. She was artificially inseminated so they didn't have to open it at breeding.
Hall of Fame Director Jerry Racke Dies ATA President in 1996.
He was in Alabama participating in a field trial on Feb. 23 when his horse stepped in a hole and Mr. Racke fell to the ground. A blood clot developed in his brain. He had been hospitalized for a couple of weeks prior to his death. The Alexandria, Kentucky resident was 64. Educator and sports coach, Jerry Racke was one of the finest trapshooters in the United States. He was 64 years old.
Good morning - no foals yet here :) Hope you have a great day also.
You live in the wrong part of the country :) It was sunny this morning but has now become overcast, probably about mid 60's outside.
This drive my husband nuts - but since I used to do it as a kid - I can't say much - except - this is truly a "dead broke" horse!!!
Hope everyone is having a nice spring - we've been so busy here - I haven't posted lately - hope to catch up when we're done with school/ sports/ etc. and enter "summer" mode :)
What a delightful picture :)
I'd MUCH rather live down South again. Texas/OK/ARK sound GREAT! heh....I like 'warm'.
:) - well, I have high hills here, just not as warm as early as down south. 'Course no humidity or bugs either.
LOL.
My daughter used to run barrels on Rocky sitting backwards on the saddle. I reacted the way your husband does:). Dead broke or not, any horse can get stupid at any time.
But with age comes caution, she wouldn't do it now I don't think.
Becky
WEll everyone cross your fingers. I'm heading out to tie Harley to the trailer.
Becky
Fingers crossed, waiting to hear.
