This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
It took a coupla weeks I think. It started getting real puffy up there first and you could tell that's what it was gonna do. I just kept some of that black drawing salve on it. She had a hole in her hoof that had to grow out, but other than that, no problems.
Sorry to hear about Bluebell. So disappointing for you. I will not breed Sarah Lee now until she is at my place.
Sounds like a good trainer. I hate people who think they have to beat a horse into submission. Sounds like a good choice to leave her there for a while longer.
Sounds like you are having bad times too. I hope your horse gets over the lameness soon.
There wasn't actually a stone in there. That's just what I've always heard it called when they bruise the sole of their hoof on something. But the abscess did work out the top and drain. She felt lots better when it did.
We have Old Macs and Easy Boots, we prefer the Old Macs. I just ordered a barrier boot from Country Supply that seems like an Old Mac with the velcro fasteners. We are going to try some of those to see how they work.
A little off topic but I thought about something I wanted to tell yall yesterday when I saw the hoof posts. SL isn't all there. I really hope she perks up mentally after this over. Have you ever tied a horse to a fence post and see them hit it? She did. I untied her and started to lead her off. Done it 100's of times and she dropped her head and knocked herself silly. It was like she diddn't see it and then when she was on the wash rack she was half standing on a oiece of concrete. Normally she would step and balance on stable ground. She was just standing there with half her foot not touching anything with the weight on the outside. I had to make her step back. This one worrying me (as you can probably tell)
I think she'll be fine when this is over and she's well again. She's just sick and miserable right now and probably not paying attention.
She's just sick and not paying attention to anything but her own misery - I've been there, and bonking your head when you already feel bad is even more maddening, isn't it?
As for standing only half-on something, it really makes me uneasy when they do that loading or unloading in the trailer, stepping or standing there with only a tippy toe on the deck. They slip off, they're gonna skin their shins. So maybe it's the ouchies you can see coming that make you shudder.
OK maybe they're both bad ;~D.
Yeah, that's what I'm hoping.
H've had trouble with Easy Boots staying on too. I even bought the keeper straps, but all they do is keep you from loosing them when then DO come off. Then your horse is flopping along like he's got a flat tire. LOL! I think they'll stay on if you get EXACTLY the right size and don't do any fast moving or deep mud. The darned things are too expensive to lose!
Poor ol' SaraLee. She must really feel awful. It must be like having a really bad case of the flu. You hurt all over, can't breathe and it's a major ordeal just to get from point A to point B. I'm sure she'll get over it, but it may take her a while to get back to her old self.
I hope that's it.
I've never pulled a shoe myself. Haven't had to, but I have watched the farrier take off the clinches so that I would know how.
