This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Looks like it's gonna be a long night for a lot of folks in the SC tonight. :-(
What a night!

How was Bluebells vet check? I haven't heard from mine.
Becky
Our vet has an answering machine with a number to call if its an emergency, I called it, its a beeper and left our number twice. Still no answer. Misty seems to be doing ok, I've just come back in. I'm going to take deaconjim out there when he gets home. I dont know why we havent been called back, unless both vets are already on emergency calls. She sin't draining fluid now and still doesnt have any cough which I guess is good. I still want her checked though..............
OOooohhh excitement tonight with BamBam! 25 days is a little early though isnt it? Hope everythign goes well for her and you.
please excuse spelling, I am very tired and anxious.
Me too but I can't spell when I'm relaxed sometimes either though:')
While we are waiting get this. Remember many months ago when I was ticked off because I couldn't find the log cabin calendar issue? Well I sent them a letter and told them I would like to subscribe if they would send me a calendar and if they couldn't then I wasn't interested. I had forgot about it. Today I got a june issue. I wonder if my calendar coming and if not do I have to pay for the magazine?
:) Yes, guess it will be. Well, maybe we can keep each other company.
It also says that strangles usually begins to subside after the tenth day of infection and penicillin should be continued for at least a week after the abscesses drain and temperature returns to normal.
I've got 14 horses plus one mare that is leased and my daughter-in-laws mare. 16 total or about ten too many. :)
What is going on with the vets today? No one is around!!!
I can't think of what could be wrong with Misty unless she has some kind of blockage in her throat, but how would she do that? Maybe it's an allergy and I'm misunderstanding what you are describing.
http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?PGGUID=2e87c385-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5I read that on the site HOTD posted but look at this. Sulfa seems to work too.
When I was cleaning SLs nostrils out I could get really high up in her right side but the left swollen and only open about half way and she has mucous coming from her tear ducts. She looks so miserable. I feel bad that I didn't vaccinate them for this but she (both of them) got what the vet ordered. Mine told me it still doesn't give them immunity but just lessens the disease.
I think it would work - the Merck Manual says it is sensitive to penicillin, sulfamerazine, sufamethazine, and trimethoprim sufadiazine. They would be your sulfa drugs correct?
I believe strangles is distemper and I know it is highly contagious so I'm not sure just how effective a vaccination would have been. We have always tried to prevent an outbreak rather than vaccinate in case of one.
Yeah. Tucoprim. Okie took it for 10 days. The owner getting me another bottle tomorrow. I gave her the first dose tonight. I'll let my vet know but I had a nap and slept on it and not worried about him getting mad now. Someone had to do something and he didn't show up or return my calls so.....
You are completely right there - if he can't be bothered to do his job, which includes talking to owners and returning calls, he has no room to say anything, and at this point, if he did, I'd be tempted to say stuff it.
She is a mess trying to take it too. It must smell bad. Okie didn't like it either. Tomorrow I'm going to mix each scoop up with apple sauce in a 60 cc syringe and see if that is easier.
Yes, try that or molasses - anything to cover the taste of it. Good luck on it.
