The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She's doing great, the only way you can tell that she's had a problem is her leg is shaved where the surgery was done.

You laugh but it wasn't funny at the time. I'm holding a tail over that feels like it weighs 20 pounds and a themometer in with the other hand. I'm short too, ok and she stands there farting:')

My daughter just came in and asked me what was so funny!

Somebody should have got that on video.

Wow. You are getting a lot of riding time in lately. Doesn't that just irritate you when the gatekeepers don't want to get out of the way? I don't know what I'm going to do about riding. I understand the medical need but it isn't good for me or the horse to be off too long.

Well I wouldn't do anything until Sarah Lee is feeling better. I'm sure that she'd appreciate it. :-) Are there any school horses that you can ride if she's out of commission for a while? How's Okie doing?
It's nerve wracking more than irritating when horses crowd at the gate, or one is being pushy. I'm always afraid that someone is going to get kicked, or someone is going to get out. For me that would be especially bad because the property is unfenced outside the paddocks. If I ever have my own place, it's all going to be fenced in. I don't care if I have to go broke to do it, it's going to be done. :-)

Oh, I'm gonna give her time off to rest. I just meant it's a bad situation no matter how you look at it. She's sick and off but when she's well and hasn't been rode awhile will I be back where I started? That's what I meant about not being rode not good for her. Okie seems good just sluggish and not his usual self. I'm going to talk to the vet monday about what he can do right now.
Are you getting in the saddle in the pasture? I don't until mine are out and away from the other horses. I just walk swinging the lead rope. Sarah Lee and Okie have learned it's not for them. The geldings know I'll use it and back off. A few of the mares will challenge me though and I have to keep an eye out for them and keep making them get out of the way.

I don't think that you guys should be set back too too far, I mean she isn't green. The worst that could happen is that she'll be out of shape. Nothing overly catastrophic. :-)

No, no, I tack up in the barn. The pasture is huge and there's LOTS of room for horses to run and hide. I'll never forgive one horse for making me track him through three feet of snow while he was all the way in the corner under some trees. It makes me nervous when the alpha horse tries to follow me with his ears back and presents his butt. It's great for the horses to have the room, but sometimes I wish that they were in smaller paddocks for convenience. :-) What's the set up at your barn?

It's probably a futile request, but....

can anyone say a few prayers on behalf of our Twister?(the rescue horse)

At 4:15 pm today all were well. At the 6:30 feeding time she was 'missing'. We found her in a little gully, laying in a trickle of water, and moaning. I JUST got back. We've been trying to get her up on her feet, she tries, but no go so far. She's eaten the grain we put in front of her.

I've been praying and begging, but it's done no good. It's MY fault she's in this hurt. I NEVER should have saved her from the meat wagon. I just prolonged her death.

Thanks but we will need it - both horses are not shed out completely yet, and haven't been worked at all. Our weather has been so strange it's just not been possible to get them in show shape. But - can't miss the first show of the season :)

Carry a whip with you when you go out and use it on any rear end pointed your way - they will learn to stay out of your way.

Can you get a vet out? Do you have Banamine on hand? Are all of her limbs okay? Check her gums and see if they are pink or white. Oh my, praying as hard as I can.

I would, but they aren't my horses. I'm reluctant to do anything more than drive them away with a lead rope. If I get agressive back, he usually backs down.

It's certainly not your fault, don't be silly. Do you know what's wrong? I'll be praying hard.

I understand how you feel but unless you are 6'6" and weigh 350lbs, those horses need to stay back or you could get hurt seriously, just from them moving out of another's way.

Oh I totally agree with you. Knock on wood, I've never been hurt handling a horse. (Riding them is another story) The whole ordeal only lasted about 5 minutes, but 5 minutes is enough. Usually I'm pretty crafty about sneaking horses out of there. :-) This time I couldn't get out before I was noticed. This sort of thing doesn't happen all the time, thank goodness.
