This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Those are lymph nodes. They swell when they are fighting infection.
I don't understand the level of uncertainty about what is going around this barn. Veterinarian(s) have been there, drugs are being dispensed. What are they treating? I'd have a long talk with the vet tomorrow, in person and try to get some solid information, I wouldn't settle for what it might be.
You understand then. It is so frustrating. The owner thought Okie had strangles. The house vet said no, rhino. Then horses for sure that were vac get sick. My vet didn't tell her anything. I will corner him tomorrow for answers. Yes, I want them treated and glad Okie responded so well, but what the hell is going on? I'm not blaming anyone or trying to cause problems. People and animals get sick. It happens. I just want to know what I'm dealing with.
They have really tried. It was just a gelding problem at first. All others seperated and the barn where the babies are is still off limits. Water tanks and stuff have been disinfected. If this is viral, medication won't help except for complications. The ones not treated seem to recover about the same as the ones on it. I was there when she asked her vet. He wasn't sure and treats symptoms. He gave me a long inservice about reasons for him not doing labs. Anyway I'm going to ask my vet if he doesn't think it's viral to do a culture if it's not too expensive. He may have already drawn blood as far I know. Everytime before he always has. I just need to find him.
I've had two kinds of vets... I've had the minimalist type that don't do more than is absolutely necessary, and I can appreciate the smaller size of their bills, but I do want a curiousity about minimization and recovery from my vet. As the boarding stable owner, I would never have been satisfied with any reason to not do labs. Not when there are many horses who need to be protected at that point.
It sounds like SL does have strangles. Is she on antibiotics? If at all possible, have your vet - in your presence - examine her. Take his advice, not the advice of the barn vet - who should have done a lot more a lot sooner. Okie did not soundlike he had strangles
My vet saw her today. I will definitely be there when he comes back. He gave them both injections. I wrote it down at work. bay...something.
I'm so sorry you are going through this - it's so frustrating, along with frightening. Call his office tomorrow early and ask to speak to him, or to have him call you asap. Find out what he thinks and then make sure he hears from you that you want to be there whenever he treats your horses, unless you yourself tell him differently.
They have some of the same symptoms though. Lot's of green snot and coughing. Okie had a stiff neck too. I could not feel Okies lymph nodes like I can her's though.
I'm going to. What is the hardest for me is leaving her. I don't know what I could do but I hated leaving. Maybe I'll get my respitory therapist out tomorrow lol.
I sure wish you had somewhere else to board them.
Good Lord, I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. What a mess.
One of my pastures connects with a boarding stable. I wonder if I should keep my horses out of that pasture?
Good morning.
Becky
My husband and I were talking about maybe we looking at wrong places. We have just been looking at "land" We even almost bought one but it really wasn't what we wanted. Maybe we need to look for a place already set up with utilities and a house so we don't have to wait another year or to, to get set up. Something to think about anyway.
I sure hate to hear about SaraLee. It sounds like Strangles to me too. I think they can lance the swollen glands and let the puss out if they get too big, but sometimes they'll rupture on their own. I know you're frustrated at the barn owner and vets. I would be too. Maybe you'll get some answers today.
I would just make sure that my horses were up to date on their vaccinations for every possible disease, and probably more often than normal on the ones that are airborn or mosquito-born like Flu, Rhino, Strangles, and West Nile and Encephalitis.
Well, I'm thinking all this over for what to do as policy in our own boarding stable someday, and I think the answer might that I vaccinate them myself, all together, and just bill the boarders.... I don't know how else you enforce vaccinations on people's word and memory about whether they are up to date on everything.
Epidemiology
Strangles is very contagious, especially with foals, spreading easily from horse to horse and often leading to large outbreaks with many horses affected. It is spread in the discharges (pus) from the nose and burst abscesses. Objects such as water troughs, feed buckets, brushes, reins and other equipment, if contaminated with infected pus, can also spread the disease. Recovered horses can spread the disease for up to eight months, even though they can appear clinically healthy and normal.
Sounds like a good plan, and you can list the vaccinations that will be included in the boarding agreement so everybody knows up front what is expected.
