*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'd think that with your friend Tiffany's mare, I would try progressive desensitization first and see if that wouldn't work. But her problem is, she's learned that if she fights hard enough, she'll either break something and get free, or somebody will come rescue her and set her free. The reward is the same for her. It'll be a very hard habit to break either way.

All the more reason to train them to stand tied and to have things around their legs when they are little and can't break things. Then when they get bigger they never realize just how strong they really are.

On that note, here are the pictures I took yesterday of my leading arrangement on Miss Ellie...

This is her with her little halter on...

This is the lead just run through the halter and around her girth...

If just the lead around the girth doesn't work, then you take the end of the lead and loop it around their butt too and pull mostly on that until they catch on. Then you can drop back to just the girth, then to just attached to the halter...

I can't get it to open, but I could tell what it was supposed to be! "Wild horse resuce ranch up for sale" I'd love to have it!

Yup. It's a place in Arizona.

They want $600k for it though. A bit out of my price range or I'd get it for ya, sis!

LOL! Now THAT is very true.

It seems like most horse rescue locations are in the south. It must be because it's easier to transport them in the winter there. *shrugs*

And perhaps, cheaper to buy large chunks of land, and perhaps, cheaper to feed them year-around. Here, there's several months when it's too cold for pasture to grow at all.

It's a place in Arizona.

Gilbert, Arizona, unfortunately... one of the Phoenix suburbs. I cannot think of a more hideous place to live. If it were in the White Mountains, or around Flagstaff, I'd entertain the idea.

Oh, she pitched a fit or two. They always do. I started out without the butt rope and she threw herself back into a briar patch one time, but she got up and waited for me to come rub her boo-boos, so she was ok. After that, I put the butt rope on and had a little bit better luck, but she still fell down a time or two anyways. She finally figured out that it was easier to take a step forward when I pulled on the butt rope than it was to pitch a fit, so we stopped there. I'll do it again this afternoon and I'll bet she'll be alot quicker on the uptake this time. Sleeping on it seems to help. But I think more than anything, the restraining work you do when you're imprinting is what makes the difference.

Great idea - several of our horses are hobble trained.

I just now got around to going out to let the horses out. Bay was standing at the pasture gate with that forlorn 'call of the wild' look. The girls were more than ready to go out too.

I don't think your horse is capable of walking past that dirt spot without dropping and rolling. It's hardwired in her ;~D

Cyn has a set beauty regimen, just as most ladies do.

She's wondernig if maybe a few more mud clumps in her mane will push Bay over the edge. *grin*

Must have been a slight sprain or strain cuz the bute seems to be working. He's been running around like a fool this morning. Might take him on a short ride in a little while.

No parade here! :-D

I'd love to see you and Hair get your hands on a place like that one. A turn-key operation that could provide enough income to live on, but be something you absolutely enjoy doing.
