The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, I just remembered, I've got a couple of pictures from Saturday morning of the placenta that the baby was born in. I knew I need to look at it to make sure it was whole, but I've never really spread one and looked at it before. It's HUGE! I also found the tongue-looking thing that somebody was talking about on the thread a while back. I never knew to look for that either. I wonder what it's for. You wanna see the pictures, or do you think they're too gross?

Heh - I don't know.... no one complained about the graphic horse porn I posted yesterday, so what's a little placenta? I'd like to see it, as would most, probably, who haven't birthed lots of babies... lets us know what to look for!

Ok. They're not too bad. It just looks like a giant white Wal-Mart bag. Oh, wait, you wouldn't know what that looks like would you! ;o) Give me a second and I'll round them up...

Ok, here's the placenta. I never really noticed that they had two halves. The part on the left is pretty much clear. The part on the right is very thick and has a plush looking lining. I should've layed something down there for scale. The whole thing from left to right is probably close to 6ft. I'm not sure which piece the baby is in coz she was already born and dry when I found her. Maybe Rose Of Sharn would know...

Here's the "tongue" thing. It sure is weird. It looks and feels just like a piece of liver or rubber. Not sure what it's function is, but I think somebody said it was in the foal's mouth. Yuck! ...

I buried them both down in the woods, out of the pasture. I didn't want them to draw scavengers. There's not many around here, but we do have the occasional coyote and stray dog.

Cool! When you are spreading the placenta out does it tear easy or is it pretty strong?

The white thing looks like the membranes. You sure it's a placenta? In people it looks muscle or like beef steak.

It was pretty tough. It didn't tear at all when I spread it out, at least that I saw, and the whole thing weighed at least 10 lbs, maybe more. It had these huge veins in it. I'm not sure which piece was the umbilicus coz there was a cord like thing between the two halves, and then there was this other long cord like piece that you can see coming out of the membrane half. I may print a copy and ask my vet to 'splain it to me.

Maybe the placenta was the thing on the right half then. The right half was actually like a bag or balloon and it was very thick and plush-looking on the inside. That red area in the lower part of it was actually a hole and the red is the inside that you're seeing through the hole. Am I making any sense?

Sounds like maybe you got them both. ROS has a pic here somewhere of one of hers still in the membrane.

Speeking of deliveries, I have a new granddaughter. I'm watching the oldest and was planning on leaving when she was about a 7-8. She went from 5 to 10 to "'here I am "in about 30 minutes.

The thing on the left is the bag the foal was in, the thing on the right is the placenta.

The thing in their mouth keeps fluid from being swallowed. You're suppose to throw it up on the roof of your barn for good luck:)

I found RoS's pictures of Thunder when he was born. They were back on post 397 of Thread Four, but here is the best one showing the foal still in the bag. I hope she doesn't mind me reposting it...

I was thinking about your pictures. IF the two parts are connected still by the cord, then she delivered the placenta without the cord breaking. That is odd, isn't it???
