*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She's eating hay now still... I don't think she's colicked. I think she's just tired.

Heh, I can understand that. Maybe you should make a ~big~ pot of coffee for her?

Ornery little pony. You sure do get some shots of her at her best. She makes me laugh...lol

Gosh, I hope Cyn is ok. Might be the excitement of the camping trip. ;')

Some of those flat mouth piece bits can be as severe as a ported bit. You figure, that the pressure is right down on their tongue. The port would take some pressure off the tongue and put it on the roof on the mouth. The longer the shank, the more leverage and severity.

Shank length is limited at AQHA shows. Did you ever see riders having to drop their bridles, after performing in reining classes?

Hey Hair, that long acting tranquilizer has worked wonders to keep Winnie quiet. She seems perfectly normal but I know that she's not, normally she would be bouncing around the stall wanting out with her buddies. It really might be worth looking into for Pony, for a little help with training.

There were a lot of people, who would agree with you, about the showing of solid colored Appaloosas, me included. So much pressure was put on the ApHC, by the big boy breeders to show these horses. It was suppose to "improve" the breed, by outcrossing. In a way, I am sure it did, but color did suffer. Sure, there is a chance you might get a solid even with both parents being Appaloosas. My understanding was that this was only suppose to last a few years, (the showing of solids).

I have not gotten the Appaloosa Journal/News for a long time, don't know if that rule changed or not. That reminds me, I still have all those magazines in my basement. Dating from the 70's...lol

That tranquilizer would be a good tip! She's just often so ~nervous~... a little bit of something that would make her not worry herself into a panic might get us over the major hurdles, when and if we ever seriously try to get her trained.

Appaloosas can be a heartbreak to breed for show... You put a whole year of waiting, and really hope for color... but sometimes you get really nice horses that would be show quality but for the lack of one spot. Paints are the same way, color breeds are just such a gambler's wager.

At paint shows, I ~believe~ all the solids are separated into their own classes, but they can be just as competitive. The offspring of Paints, once outcropped from regular QH and TB stock, can't be returned to AQHA registry even when they are solid and indestinguishable from any other plain brown QH.

It'd be worth a try, that's for sure. If nothing else, it'll help keep the handler safe from a nervous horse that might get panicky during training.

Yeah - you could make a lot of progress in a month... course... it'd stink if she woke up after the month and didn't remember any of what she learned stoned ;~D

The flat mouth piece bits I have seen still have a port, or arch in the middle for tongue relief. The one in the picture did too, but they had the flat part turned up vertically so you could see it's width and it made it hard to see the port.

I think your horse is fine... I let her and the others out into the back forty. She's getting kindof bonded to me, following me around... we need you to spend some time with her this weekend ;~D

Pony tryin' to reach an itch...

And this is me itching the spot for her... she's playing lip popping games but I didn't quite capture it on film ;~D

Here's a new picture of Hope. I gave her a body clip the other day. Her roan shows up alot more here...

than it does here...

Doesn't even look like the same horse. She was a little furball before. Now she's looking a little more feminine. She'll be a year old the end of May.

I clipped Blade too and he looks alot better. All those parts and cowlicks are gone, but now you can see a dark mark left on his side from an old cut. There's another one along the top of his back too. It'll always be dark like that, but at least it's hidden by the saddle.

She's not close to the same color at all! She's blue when she's clipped! Will she stay red in winter or is she turning greyer with each coat change?
