This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Um... No, thanks ;~D If I had the wherewithal to do grass on an acreage scale, my own pasture wouldn't look like tired and overgrazed... ;~D

I gave Sarah Lee a hair cut. I trimmed where the halter goes. I was going to cut her poll hair too. Her bangs in her eyes. One of those lapse moments I guess:') The owner explained why I shouldn't do that:')

Harley and I had a glorious ride. We covered alot of ground today, lots of hills, and some long trotting. He tends to want to break into a lope. We need to work on staying on pace.
Tomorrow will be Rusty and Rocky's turn again. The shoer is coming in the morning...it's hard to believe it's already been 6 wks since the last time. I even had Mack look it up on the check registar. I may leave Rusty's alone for a couple of more weeks. He's not getting rode that much, and his feet still look pretty good. I thought Chris trimmed him a bit short last time.

We've been in the high 70 this week so far. The sun didn't shine much today tho. I've gotten some tan the last few days. I do OK with the temps up to about 95, over that is too hot.

I love it warm but unfortunately I'm fair skinned and freckle and burn too. I can't handle the cold though. I start violently shaking and chattering.

Hair the bath thing might not be a bad idea for my horses either. Poor Harley has dirt caked on him now, where the saddle was yesterday. Really shows on the lighter horses. The farrier will be here at 9, then i have to ride Rusty, and Rock, then maybe I'll try bathing at least one of them..

White's bad, but Black's no better, just different. They look horrible when they roll in the dust, plus black hair "sunburns" and gets red looking. Bay and sorrel are definately the most "low maintenance", at least here in this red Alabama clay soil.

Rusty's coat, IMO, is looking really drab, dull. He gets wormed every month, so I don't think that is the problem. I realize he is a puny horse, and this may be tied up with having ulcers, or other issues. I asked at the feed store the other day what to feed him to shine him up some, and the guy recommended this oil stuff. But he also said that roan's don't shine much???? I swear even being puny he had shine every other summer I had him. His coat feels soft not corse, he just doesn't seem to have much shine, altho his black stockings look shiny and slick. Is it that he hasn't finished shedding and this is still winter coat do you think?
I really probably need to do bloodwork on this horse again...sigh, more money on what seems to be never ending problems.
And I hate pouring anythink on his feed,,,he is sooooo picky. I top dress all the horses feed with that 12-12=12 mineral poweder, they all eat it right up, he doesn't touch it. It's always in the bottom of his bucket, now does that mean he doesn't like it, or he doesn't need it??? He does that with ANY THING I add to his feed.
He makes me crazy:)

If he won't eat the oil, you might try a product that is a hoof and coat supplement... I can't remember the name of it now. It's a pellet that goes in his feed as a top dressing and it might pass by his sensors.
But it might just be the season, if he's still in his coat change. Bay is, and he looks dull.
Good morning. After all the working outside the last couple of days, I have very sore feet... not achy muscle sore, more like the soles are bruised... Bad shoe cushion maybe although I was wearing good hiking boots.
Anyway, they hurt on contact like the soles are bruised, but here's the weird part. The first couple of steps after I've been sitting are excrutiating, but it works out the more I walk. That doesn't sound like a bruise at all.

I'll bet he just hasn't finished shedding yet. Tennessee, my chestnut gelding still has some dull downy-looking hair hanging on. Blade still has tons. His hair is so thick that I actually gave him a full-body clip last week and he's still shedding like crazy. But as far as roans not shining, I don't think that's true. When Blade sheds off, his white shines like silver. I actually think roan shows the least dirt of any. There's enough dark that the dirt doesn't show and enough white that the dust doesn't show either. The only think that shows up much are green grass or manure stains. Adding oil to the feed is the only thing I've heard that might make them shine more. I've used corn oil before. Just start with a little bit mixed in real good and if he eats it, gradually increase the amount. It'll put weight on him too. Other than that, there's a coat finishing product called "Show Sheen" that some of my riding buddies use that they claim makes them shine real nice and repels dust too. I've never tried it, but I'm going to one of these days. It's good for detangling manes too.
It's called "Farrier's Formula" and it's made by Life Data Labs, about 30 miles from where I live. I used to use it a long time ago for Tennessee's feet, but I couldn't tell a whole lot of difference, but maybe I wasn't using enough of it. It's pretty pricey.
Mine do the same thing. I think it's arthritis of the feet.
The downy hair hanging on is what it looks like to me Rusty is doing. So I'll give it awhile.
I'm with you on the roans never showing dirt. Rusty never looks dirty. Rocky stays nice looking too.
Show sheen is very good to make grooming easier, and detangling manes and tails. I use it alot for that. I don't use alot on their bodies, and never where the saddle and cinch go. Makes them too slippery and your saddle will slide. But it does make the dirt brush off easier, and will shine them some, but it's more a cosmetic shine, rather then a natual shine, if you know what I mean.
I may try this oil the guy at the feed store reccommended. It was only $12 a gallon and smelled really nice.

I used to give my English Setters wheatgerm oil when I was showing them, but that stuff is EXPENSIVE. It's supposed to work though.
I'm freaking out here...I was looking for my checkbook to get the check wrote for the farrier, and I can't find it....I don't ever carry a purse, don't own one. I carry my billfold in my back pocket. I just recently got my own checking account, so I put all my stuff, drivers license, credit cards, etc, in a nice check book and have been carrying it. The problem is it's a lot bigger then the billfold I used, so it stuck out a little bit. It felt funny, so I have been pulling it out laying it places and now I can't remember where it was I took it out last time. I'm 99% sure it's here in the house....but....
