Washoe was a chimp in an experiment using ASL, which showed some language ability. Koko is virtually a star in her own right, a gorilla using ASL to have a lot of conversations and having a lot of news stories written about her.
Hawkings talks by looking at a computer screen and spelling out words because his dystrophy (which has be diagnosed as ALS, but very, very, very slow in his case) has left him basically unable to move. I don't know if he's on a ventillator or not.
What all three have is a way to communicate. Thus, Washoe and Koko have gotten some of the status of personhood...but if Hawkings wasn't the internationally known physicist he is, and didn't have a way to communicate that works so well and family and friends who care about him, he might have ended up in a hospice a long time ago.
But someone cared enough to make it happen.
