From the Bible to the Genius of Poetry...

JERUSALEM

By the rivers of Babylon,
there we sat,
sat and wept,
as we thought of Zion.
There on the poplars
we hung up our lyres,
for our captors asked us there for songs,
our tormentors, for amusement,
"Sing us one of the songs of Zion."
How can we sing a song of the Lord on alien soil?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand wither,
let my tongue stick to my palate
if I cease to think of you,
if I do not keep Jerusalem in memory
even at my happiest hour...

(Psalm 137:1-6)

*

"By the Waters of Babylon..."
(From "Hebrew Melodies")

In the valley of waters we wept on the day
When the host of the Stranger made Salem his prey;
And our heads on our bosoms all droopingly lay,
And our hearts were so full of the land far away!

The song they demanded in vain - it lay still,
In our souls as the wind that hath died in the hill -
They called for the harp - but our blood they shall spill
Ere our right hands shall teach them tone of their skill.

All stringlessly hung in the willow's sad tree,
As dead as her dead-leaf, those mute harps must be:
Our hands may be fettered - our tears still are free
For our God - and our Glory - and Zion, Oh Thee!

George Gordon Lord Byron

LAST EARTHLING LOVE

by Marguerite

A meteorite crossed on its way
The sleepy, setting Betelgeuse,
It was the signal for my soul -
Wonderful miracles do occur.

And instant love filled my heart,
Love for a pure, kindred spirit;
Definitive love, as the certainty
Of our sure, absolute mortality.

And so I knew then, as I do now -
And nothing could change it, no -
I've met my latest earthling love
The sign heralded it from above.

And even if we will never meet
It matters not, the dies are cast;
My earthling love is here to stay
As long as I , on Earth, will last.

Riding A Rollercoaster

Read:
Galatians 6:1-10

Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. -Galatians 6:9

Bible In One Year: Judges 1-4

cover If you love someone who struggles with a substance-abuse problem, you know that your emotions and his can be like riding a rollercoaster-up and down. Today he wants help; tomorrow he's drinking or is high on drugs again. Today she's being honest; tomorrow she's running from the truth.

The Holy Spirit helps us learn how to love people like that, even in their sins and struggles. Here are a few principles we can put into practice:

  • Treat the person with respect. Be gentle when trying to restore him (Galatians 6:1). But don't do for him what he should do for himself. Don't get in the way of the consequences that God can use to bring change.
  • Remember that you do not have the power to change another person. Instead, ask God to help you become the person He wants you to be (vv.4-5).
  • Reach out in love. Seek God's wisdom in what to say and do in each encounter (James 1:5). Then rebuke or be silent-in love.
  • Depend on God. You will make mistakes. But anchor yourself in God's Word and continually commit yourself and your loved one to the Lord in prayer (Philippians 4:6).

    Making some of these choices can help to slow down the rollercoaster ride of changing emotions. -Anne Cetas

    Love is an attitude, love is a prayer
    For someone in sorrow, a heart in despair;
    Love is goodwill for the gain of another,
    Love suffers long with the fault of a brother. -Anon.

    Love helps people even when it hurts.

Polar Bear
William Jay Smith

The polar bear never makes his bed;
He sleeps on a cake of ice instead.
He has no blanket, no quilt, no sheet
Except the rain and snow and sleet.
He drifts about on a white ice floe
While cold winds howl and blizzards blow
And the temperature drops to forty below.
The polar bear never makes his bed;
The blanket he pulls up over his head
Is lined with soft and feathery snow.
If ever he rose and turned on the light,
He would find a world of bathtub white,
And icebergs floating through the night.

Thank you for today's spiritual lesson, Mayor.
As I read the above, I thought of Jessica Lunsford's family.

Please Father, bless and comfort Jessica's family. Hold them in your loving embrace as you give them strength to say goodbye.
We ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.
