After you figure this out, I want you to build an XP-SP2 recovery disc by using a 'slipstream.' :0)
To: Hot Tabasco
Then you have a bad CD drive or a bad IDE cable or the cable is loose at the drive or the motherboard.

Is this original CD or a burn?

If the drive is kaput, don't despair. They are cheap (good one is less thna 50 bucks, cheap readers are about 25 bucks), and easy to replace. Still, first thing I would try is cleaning the drive with a drive cleaning disc.

dont know if you got it fixed, but:
Open control panel, select administrative tool, select disk management then look on the right for the cd drive. make sure it is "d" drive, if not, right click on the cd drive in the right window and select 'change drive letter'.
not sure if this will work, but it might be a problem if it is looking for a drive labeled d.

when you click on 'my computer' on the desktop, can you see the cd drive? if not, is the power supply plugged into the back of the cd rom all the way? if it is, open device manager and browse the cd rom and make sure dirvers are installed, if they are, did you fiddle with the drive jumpers?

Oopsie! Wooks wike someone got the source code for Office Pwogwams!
Interesting software; do you use it?
To: RedBloodedAmerican
No, it's not at all related to Office's source code. It was started by Sun as their answer to Office. It's now an open source project written and maintained by a volunteers.
I use it at home on my Linux box. I've also used it here at work to rescue corrupted Office files. (I've seen it open .doc files when Word refuses to.) It also has a built in distiller for generating .pdf files so sending legible documents to others is easy. This is a nice feature since the other person need not risk getting a worm through opening a contaminated Office document. (And to the best of my knowledge, there are no OO worms.) It also saves documents in Office's file formats so that you can easily collaborate with others.
You can't beat the price either!

If you can read the CD's contents, try clicking on Autorun
The drive is recognized in Explorer but the disk is not. I took the disk into work to check it out and it is just fine.

Did you try placing the CD against your forehead and chant: LOAD "*", 8, 1 ?

Try this. First, right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Explore." From there, right-click on your CD-ROM drive and again choose "Explore." Look for autorun.exe or setup.exe. You may find a file with a .msi extension if the others are not found.
did the above and absolutely nothing came up. No files, nothing....

uninstall service pack 2, then install your program, then reinstall service pack 2.
If my drive isnt reading, I dont dare disinstall if I run the risk of not being able to have the drive read the installation........
