We have seen in the past and recently in places like Manilla, Kiev and Beirut what thousands of people can do with a common cause can do. Commonly called the "People Power" revolution. In the mid-1980s a popular movement sprang up to oust the corrupt Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. As the resistance gained momentum, two key military officers defected from the government and sequestered themselves inside a Manila military base. What followed was an amazing example of nonviolent struggle as hundreds of thousands of ordinary Filipinos took to the streets to protect the rebel officers from troops still loyal to Marcos.
What the story of the Philippine revolution demonstrates is the power people can have when they withdraw consent.
When a key opposition leader, Benigo Aquino was assasinated in Manila Intl Airpot by Marcos cronies, the public erupted. After two years of Internal pressure, Marcos promised elections. They were marked by widespread fraud. Aqunios widow, Cory, ran against Marcos. After the fradulant election, she inspiried a Non-Violent revolution. One by one members of the Marcos government defected. The defection leaders are hiding out in a small military camp with little protection. Aquino called upon the people to protect them. Hundreds of thousands respond, and stand face to face with the tanks and marines of Marcos.
In short, the people defeated Marcos with peaceful Opposition.
In a similar situation in which all of us are much more firmilliar with, the opposition leader was assasinated. The "Cedar Revolution" has taken to the streets, protesting Syria and ousting its own government.
In Kiev, a fradulent election and the attempted murder of an opposition leader sparked mass protests and forced the government to resign.
In our own country, in the greatest city in the world, the United Nations, self proclaimed 'Voice for the World' is knee deep in scandal. The only group who is truthfully investigating the Oil-For-Food Scandal are the Republicans of the United States. Now you may say that the UN did not assasinate a US opposition leader, or murder innocent civilians. However, THE MONEY GENERATED BY THE UN HAS KILLED HUNDREDS, MAYBE EVEN THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN TROOPS. The Ignorance of the UN led to the US going it alone, forcing our troops to take the vast majority of the casualties. KOFI ANNAN MUST GO. And conservatives in the United States seem to be the only ones who can make that happen. I am inspired by the demostrations in Kiev and Beirut, but the disgusting situation at the UN is being ignored. I believe the only way to get international attention is to use people power, and demand a full investigation into the Oil for food scandal, the UN Sex Scandals in Africa and the Resignation of Kofi Annan. I may be just one man but i believe speak for millions of Americans. -C. Rogers
