The 50 Best Guy Movies Of All Time
MensJournal ^ | 12/04 | staff

Man cannot live by Cameron Diaz alone. Sometimes we need big guns, fast cars, dumb jokes, and huge explosions. You got a problem with that?

Culturally, guys often get the short end of the stick. Most books are bought by women, the music industry caters to teenagers, and when was the last time an art museum had an exhibit on nitro-burning funny cars? But the movies have always been good to us. The first feature film, 1904's The Great Train Robbery, was full of trains, guns, and chases -- guy friendly from start to finish. And Hollywood has been in our corner ever since.

But what makes a great guy film, and how did Men's Journal pick the best of all time? At first there were no hard and fast restrictions; we just knew one when we saw one. But over time basic criteria emerged. Violence trumps sex, war beats peace, and you better have a very good reason to oppose anything with Steve McQueen in it.

We believe that a true guy movie is a movie only a guy can love. A crucial distinction. Pop one into the DVD player and your wife or girlfriend should run screaming from the room. We frown upon films that are too serious or sensitive. The Deer Hunter got KO'd despite lengthy elk hunting and torture scenes because Meryl Streep was in it. Sure, she's a great actress, but rules are rules: no films with Meryl Streep. (snip)

All of them classics and all should be in the top 10.

Me too CG, but I gotta make two comments. One, Road Warrior should probably by #1 since the one time my good friend and I tried to watch it, and we love MEL, we switched to The Thorn Birds in about 5 minutes flat. LOL, never were we so glad of Richard Chamberlin, even though he's a priest, alright, I admit it, it's trash, but such fun trash, really. I also would think that Cool Hand Luke would be a lot higher up than it is, based on hubby's constant referencing of it!

I've read the comments and the magazine article.
I would have to agree with many of the comments made.

I would have to go with the top seven - but the Matrix? No WAY! Replace it with The GREAT ESCAPE or PATTON!
I really don't do Kung Fu-ey kinds of movies - so, I'm out on Enter the Dragon and The Killer. Blade would be out as well as The Seven Samarai. Diner (are they serious?) and Dazed and Confused would be removed IMMEDIATELY.

I just watched Jack Nicholson in Chinatown last night. That would get a vote from me. Love Monty Python, LOVE Air America! How about Pride of the Yankees! LOVE THAT ONE! Maybe Bulletproof with Wayans and Sandler... okay, now I'm just being silly.

Loved... Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Fish called Wanda, A Few Good Men!!!How about Hunt for Red October? Top Gun? Maltese Falcon?

Maybe an Indiana Jones flick?
The Right Stuff!
SPARTACUS!!!!
TORA TORA TORA

Off the top of my head....

The Killer isn't a Kung Fu movie. It is a John Woo film with Chow Yun Fat using twin .45s to kill more people than I have ever seen.

Some I haven't seen mentioned
Boondock Saints
Porkys
Chopper
Smokey and the Bandit

Well, I figured you had good taste, and you did not disappoint. You are a woman of many man's dreams due to the fact that you'll sit through a Monty Python movie. Now if you could acquire the taste for Benny Hill.... ;o]

Benny Hill.... I find myself at a loss for him -

Nope, not buying into Benny Hill yet.

But... Remembered some that I believe have gone unmentioned.

Flight of the Phoenix - original of course - even though Paul Mantz was killed during the filming - sniffle.

LA Confidential

Butch Cassidy and/or The Sting

Henry V

From Here to Eternity....

Speaking of Tom Selleck, and completely off topic, that was a pretty good TV movie he was in last weekend, called STONE COLD, about a cop in a small town up against a freaky serial-murdering couple.

As a woman, I'm offended.

I like all of those movies (barring two, which I haven't seen).

So why are they 'guy' movies.

Monty Python's 'Holy Grail' is great. Nearly as good as The Life of Brian! ;-)
